From my trip to Charleston earlier this month, Magnolia Cemetery - an amazing cemetery, enormous, old, a bit worn down (to be expected when many grave sites are approaching 200 years old).

We're going to play a little game here. For those of you who know Julie, who thinks this shot will convince her to book the next flight to Charleston? Maybe she could take Lea with her, Lea is thinking of doing a project on cemeteries.

I couldn't find out anything about Wm. B. Smith or his family, though they were clearly prominent. He died around the Civil War, this was build in 1894. One of his descendants was a chief justice in South Carolina.

And I have no idea what is the significance of this particular design for their mausoleum.

I have a number of flickr contacts who have what I would call 'signature' images. As I walked around Charleston, I was reminded of several of you. So the next several shots are dedicated to a few of my flickr contacts.

This one is for Urban Photography who has a, sometimes, disturbing fascination for cemeteries. Julie, there are more - on my way out of town the last day, I spent several hours at Magnolia Cemetery.

Magnolia Cemetery is enormous. I arrived planning to walk around - thankfully, it is easy enough to maneuver by car. I had seen this one gravestone and it looked to have some interesting statuary on the top. So I pulled over. Only when I got a little closer did I realize it was a red-tailed hawk. He let me get this close until he had enough.

This one is for my nephew, Malcolm MacGregor, who for all the marvelous wildlife shots he has in his stream, desperately wants to get a hawk shot - and has the worst luck with hawks.
