Nodding trillium

This trillium popped up in my wildflower garden one year (I had never seen one before) and I am delighted to see it reappear each spring. Ants carry seeds to new locations and I've "received" red trillium from two houses down but this one traveled several blocks from Eberwhite woods (I think. It's the only other place I've seen nodding trillium)

We just "ran into" this snake tonight on our evening walk. My blue beauty was about 4 feet long (they can get up to six feet long). It's a fairly benign snake as far as humans are concerned. According to the DNR, "Racers have been found through most of Michigan's Lower Peninsula (except the northernmost sections) and the southern tip of the Upper Peninsula. Once common, their numbers have fallen in many places. Needless persecution by humans as well as habitat loss are probable factors in this decline."

This early stage shows the bud between two leaves (rather reminds me of a cheerleader with pom-poms). Eventually the flower will hang down beneath the leaves. The eventual fruit will be hidden from sight, though the squirrels know exactly where to find the fruit, once it ripens.

My Nikon Coolpix P510 has a hard time focusing on small, flitting birds. However, this was the first time I've been surrounded by migrating warblers, even if the experience didn't last long.

This is my most successfully abundant transplant in my backyard (which is mostly native wildflowers), mainly because the neighbor's hired help used Roundup on the first patch (trying to kill poison ivy) and I thought for sure my Mayapples would never survive. I brought back another batch from the cabin the following spring only to discover the first transplants were healthy and growing. Now both groups are going to town.

Other than the juveniles, "brown" pelican doesn't do the bird justice.

Oak Mountain State Park, AL. When my husband decided to check his "Bird Jam" app on his iPod to confirm his suspicions of a bird singing, he was busy focused on identifying the correct song. The Carolina wren was sitting a foot and a half away from him. It obviously recognized the song.

(back to my Canon EOS 5D Mark II) It's spring and cold in Michigan but I'm just in time to find the skunk cabbage flowering. The hood or spathe is exotic and colorful, showing an endless variety of burgundy, yellow, and green. The actual flower or spadix is protected within and gives off a putrid smell to attract insects for pollination.
