A great mural by graffiti artist Ripo on an abandoned factory in Berlin. Today the building is no longer abandoned but the mural is still there.

Long demolished, New York Pork was a partially burnt down slaughterhouse/UE playground in Toronto. The gnarled metal in this photo is part of the roof that collapsed during the fire. That bright orange isn't photoshopped, it's a stunning patina created by the heat of the flames.

On a foggy February night I visited the abandoned ballroom in Toronto's prestigious King Edward Hotel. The lights from the streets below created a spectacular light effect on the ceiling. I used to visit this place all the time. Now, like just about anything of interest in this city, it's getting turned into condos.

A tiny portion of the control panel in the RL Hearn Thermal Generating Station. An amazing building that I used to go to all the time but, now, haven't been to in years. It's slowly being gutted, it's fate still unknown.

Someone may have gone a little over the top with this wallpapering job. Found in an office in an abandoned Nazi (and later Soviet) training facility in East Germany, this perky pattern is not something I would associate with doom and cruelty. But I suppose Nazis characteristically had an obsessive attention to detail so, in that respect, it makes sense? I guess?

These old gas masks won't do a very good job of protecting anyone anymore. Found in an office in an abandoned factory complex in St. Petersburg, Russia, once upon a time these were emergency life savers in case the city went under siege.

Many years ago this Japanese facility was a place of healing for those stricken with polio. Now it sits next to a noisy highway, obscured by a thick layer of brush, far from the calm serenity once cherished by its guests.

It's hard to believe that this beautiful room once played a role in some of the greatest atrocities our world has seen. For this room was part of a Nazi military facility. Not far from Berlin, it sits empty, too atrocious to renovate but too historical to demolish.

A detail of a bannister leading up to a cell block in the historical Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Amazing to think that not so long ago even criminals could enjoy such design details. These days law-abiding citizens would be lucky to enjoy such a lovely addition.
