Billy with daughter Esmeralda and son Jeremy (not depicted here) at a gas station in Kings Bridge, Bronx, NY. Billy lives in Washington Heights and is most definitely a special individual. I spent two days with him and his two kids in September, and I can't wait to do another shoot with them.

Grinding along... Fall is here and it currently feels like I'm driving in 5th gear with the parking brake pulled up. Perhaps this is how it's supposed to be - you never really hit a groove, you just struggle along and keep going somehow.

I'm realizing how much work this actually is (and becoming). Looking back on that workshop week a year ago, I was lucky that so much had come together to get a semblance of an essay finished. I initially thought I could build on that experience but now it seems as if it was more the exception than the norm. I'll keep adjusting...

I had already posted about what I consider candid versus posed and of course, that is constantly evolving as I continue to shoot. But even for what I consider "posed" street portraits, I'm constantly re-examining the balance between maintaining a certain degree of spontaneity that keeps it "street" and "giving it" to the camera without a forced sense of artifice.

In that sense, I'll post later about some initial thoughts I have about the Olympus OM-D EM5 and how it facilitates what I'm trying to achieve (or maybe not...) Overall, I cannot stress how pleased I am about this camera, and I don't even like to engage in gear talk.
