What to show and what to keep wrapped?

This is the question that all artists in all times face. It feels especially relevant to the digital artist whose deployment is generally not constrained by the scarcity of atoms. But a dam is still a worthy tool as it allows for artistic gestation.

When an artist passes this natural life, followers frantically pick up all of her pieces: good, bad or otherwise. If artists showed us all their work, all through their lives, we'd surely cower from the output. I'm talking notes, studies, and sketches, here.

I am showing teases on Illostation.com. I can say: Illostation is a piece of software based on my vector illustration process. I intend it not just as a production tool but also a teaching one. My process is not taxing for computers. The software and drivers that allow for my art production were completed by 1998. Therefore older computers as well as newer ones are candidates for running Illostation. And since even older computers can elevate the disadvantaged in our society, Illostation is aimed at the students who attend those schools with underfunded computer labs. Well funded schools are welcome to run Illostation, too, naturally. The latest and greatest might do it for some, but for me, it's the very nature of digital computing that reveals fruit. So-called vintage computing is still bona fide computing. The microprocessor, no matter how old, is still a remarkable and affordable power. This is about bringing the means of artistic production to the poorest and most disadvantaged (as well as anyone else with an interest in Bezier path inking).

Elegant illustration software is the description for now. Above, a sneak peek at how it might render vector paths. More, but not much more, coming soon.

Illostation is slated for testing in 2012.

Until then: keep drawing, sketching, and marking, my friends.

Sidney Lumet (1924-2011) was a prolific filmmaker who directed some of my favourite films including Dog Day Afternoon (1975) and The Verdict (1982).

He was a venerable craftsman of not just moving pictures, but of cinematic emotional representation.

Long-time followers of my work might remember a portrait I drew of John Dewey in 2006 (on a Siteway long offline). When I was approached about using it for this book, I was compelled to re-visit this great American thinker.
