Window

birdcage posted a photo:

Well, I had been hoping to upload a couple of film shots from last weekend's photowalk today. But Penn seems to have (I hope temporarily) misplaced my four rolls of film. I'm not panicking. (pant*pant*pant*).

So I thought I'd put this up instead. I took this in 1991 in my first semester at Brooklyn College after deciding to go back to school. I lived in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, which (though you would never know it now) at the time was a little dicey. It was no Bed-Stuy, but parts of it were not so nice. There was this section of waterfront just past Kent, not far from the Domino sugar factory (which, while I was living in the neighborhood, had the soil tested for all sorts of nasty stuff and probably gave us all cancer. The lead levels were astronomical) there was an area that once had a string of warehouses. They'd burnt down at some point in the not so distant past. The neighborhood rumor was that someone had failed to pay someone something or other. The other rumor was that this was where one went if they had a "pal" in cement galoshes that needed off-loading into the East River. It was also where car theives and joy riders brought cars when they were done with them-- there were burnt-out, rusted husks all along the cement wall that kept the river at bay. For me it was a playground of rotting and burnt out, forgotten structures. I found this print, which I did in the lab at school almost fifteen years ago, stuck in a box at my parents' place last weekend.
