Standing atop a hill near the tiny village of Copper Center - this beautiful log church displays the skills of its builders that lovingly built it many decades ago.
I thought I would capture it before a fire or earthquake should take it away.

As you can see in this image, this little old cabin is about to begin a new life. The old arctic entry has been removed, and the renovations have begun. This cabin is located in a remote and bitterly cold area near the Copper River. Thankfully for the new owner - his outhouse is close to the front door. It is a true wilderness cabin in every sense.

It is hard to believe that I took this shot less than 5 months ago, and in 3 months the snow will be piling up around us once again. We are losing three and a half minutes of daylight each day now, and soon it will be up to 5 to 6 minutes a day, meaning we will lose a half hour each week. When that happens old man winter comes at us with remarkable speed. This shot was taken early in the afternoon, with the sun on the far southern horizon.
The cabins are ready - but the weather and gas prices are not co-operating this year. Plus the Alaskan Highway is currently washed out and temperarily closed in several locations. The question at this time of year is always . . . "will it be a good year, or a bad year for tourism?" We'll know the answer to that question in less than three months.
I have traveled the Alaskan Highway for 36 years, and have passed this old cabin many times. In the last couple of years the road has been improved and no longer follows the path it once did - so the cabin will now go un-noticed and Mother Nature will eventually reclaim it. I would love to know who built it so many decades ago, along the beautiful shoreline of Kluane Lake in the Yukon Territory of Canada, Was he a miner or just a solitary soul? Who ever he was, he took his secret to the grave.

A Sturdy Alaskan Cache

This cache is so well built, that I do believe it could serve as a cabin. Stick a woodstove in it - add a window or two, and call it home. It is standing in several feet of snow, so when spring arrives it will need a ladder to get to the door. I am trying to find and then capture these Alaskan log structures. With continued progress - I do believe its just a matter of time before they will all disappear, except for maybe a few small yard ornaments depicting days gone by.

Cozy Alaskan Cafe

After six new inches of snow in mid-week, spring is trying once again to take her rightful place in Alaska. The sun is actually hot, and when it hits the snow, things quickly soften and the drip-drip-drip begins. So long as it is outside of folks cabins and not inside (as so often happens) we are a happy bunch. Yesterday dawned bright and beautiful, so my husband and I decided to goof off, and spend the day enjoying Alaska's spectacular scenery. We eventually found ourselves at a bend in the road (quite literally) and decided to pop into the Copper Center Café. Now I know that there are a lot of folks from other parts of the world that might take a look at the tiny establishment, and decide that it isn't quite what they are used to when compared to the modern and glitzy world they enjoy on a daily basis. It would be a mistake on their part if they were to pass it by - as they would miss seeing the real Alaska. They would probably only notice the quirky tropical looking plant standing to the left in front of the place - or maybe the bed lying in the snow smack dab in the front. As you approach the front door and reach for the knob you will notice that it is dangling precariously, and barely hanging on - but it does gain you entry. Once inside you will be pleasantly surprised at the warm and inviting interior. Mellow wood, diamond willow, massive rock fireplace, and a bright interior due to the south facing windows to the back. I might add the coffee is the best you will find anywhere, and the food done to perfection. It is where the locals hang out - and where the tourists should, if they want to experience real life in Alaska. So come on up - spring is just around the corner.

Today as we trudge to the polls to take care of some serious business - I thought I'd add a bit of humor to my photostream. Perhaps after hearing the results of our election - some of us may need to visit the proprietors of a small business such as the one in my image.
Happy voting day everyone!

A bunch of the boys were whooping it up in the Malamute saloon;
The kid that handles the music-box was hitting a jag-time tune;
Back of the bar, in a solo game, sat Dangerous Dan McGrew,
And watching his luck was his light-o'-love, the lady that's known as Lou.
(Excerpt from; The Shooting of Dan McGrew, by Robert W, Service)

**In August of 1896, Skookum Jim, Dawson Charlie, and George and Kate Carmack discovered gold at Rabbit Creek. With the unearthing of this yellow precious metal they ignited what has been described as the largest of all the gold rushes that occurred from 1849 to 1900.

**When I spotted the place you see in this image, my mind traveled back to the days of the gold rush, and the men toiled for gold, and then spent it all in one night at one of the old saloons. What rough and tumble days they were. (Press L for best view)

When I was a young girl I loved spending Saturdays in the tiny public library in my home town. It held books that opened the whole big wide world to me. I loved reading about darkest Africa in one book, and then exploring a favorite Nancy Drew. To this day I am an avid reader, which serves me well during the long dark days of winter. Most Alaskan's are voracious readers, so I was delighted to see this homey library located in a small Alaskan village. I thought the entrance was very inviting.
Nestled in the forest within Denali Park - this little cabin calls out to tourists who visit here from all over the world. It is a busy time of year right now - but in just 2 short months, snow will be dusting the park, and the summer visitors will be back home with photos, and memories of their time in Alaska. I feel very blessed to live here year around. :))

Many years ago a young couple moved to the Alaskan wilderness, and spent the first three months living in tent while they erected their first cabin. Shortly after moving in the wife happily remarked - "at last a house!" And so the nearby creek and new the lodge became; "Atlasta House." Services included large cabins with service phones, generous meals, gas, oil, and tire repairs - as well as groceries for campers and trailerites. Early birds could grab breakfast starting at six AM. There were special accomodations for hunters, and a seperate tavern that had dancing and recreation. The old lodge has been privately owned for a number of years now, and is in need of repair. But at one time, it was the destination of many hunters and tourists.
This beautiful little homestead is located in pristine willderness - but no need for a bush plane as it has access to the road system. I'll bet there are a lot of people in the world who would love to live life in the quiet boreal forest of Alaska. You may ask "why would anyone want to leave this well kept homestead?" The answer; the folks that reside there are quite elderly. (Best viewed large)

When people move to Alaska, they are labled "cheechako's" for their first year in state. After they have experienced an Alaskan winter, they then are known as "sourdough's." Many cheechako's dream of having a cozy cabin tucked away in the wilderness. A few realize their dream, and most work in the larger cities and after many years, return to their home states in the lower 48. My husband and I have been the lucky few to live out the Alaskan dream. (If you want to move in - view large, *LOL)

Copper Center Lodge Lost to Fire

(This one is for you Rebecca.)

I took these two photos just 48 hours ago. Losing the old lodge has been heartbreaking to everyone in the Copper River Valley. The sourdough starter used to make their delicious bread was 100 years old. Happily they will be able to continue making their delicious sourdough bread as neighbors had been given some of the starter. I have learned that the Lodge will be rebuilt - but it will never be the same. **(Please view large)

**An early morning fire Sunday destroyed the historic Copper Center Lodge, one of the last surviving Alaska roadhouses.
The lodge, located off the Old Richardson Highway in Copper Center, was one of the few original roadhouses still operating, said owner Tom Huddleston.
The lodge is on the National Register of Historic Places. "It was absolutely one of the last of its kind," he said. "They called it the jewel of the roadhouses."
The original roadhouse on the site was built in 1896 and served gold miners. It was rebuilt after a 1928 fire. Huddleston's family has operated the lodge, which used to be known as the Copper Center Roadhouse, since 1948.

No neighbors - big moose - total wilderness - and magnificent mountains. I would guess that is why someone chose this spot to build their weekend get-away. Total peace and quiet, and the aurora would be magnificent as it swirls around overhead.

This fairly new log home sits along the Glenn Highway buried in snow, and "For Sale." It is many miles from any town - but does have utilities. I used to see the young couple that built it enjoying the sunrise from the front porch in the warmer months. Sadly they are gone, and their dream home sits vacant. There are a lot of places such as this around Alaska, and a lot of people that must reluctantly leave the Last Frontier for places that can give them the means to take care fo their families. However - people of "independent means" would find the wilderness a wonderful place to either retire, or just live the simple life among Alaska's wildlife.
