Alaska Highway in Autumn

JLS Photography - Alaska posted a photo:

Once the tourists have fled the north country - the Alaskan Highway, (or "Alcan" as it was called when we moved north 37 years ago) becomes a paradise for those who live and travel the road. Nothing can be heard except for the rustle of the aspen leaves in the gentle fall breezes, and the call of the geese as they migrate to warmer climates for the winter. I've stood and answered the call of the ravens, and had a long chat with an eagle as he came ever and ever closer to my silly mimicking of his call. Now that we are in the very depths of an Alaskan winter - it is hard to believe that this photo was taken on September 4th - just 4 short months ago. If only there were such a thing as a "Time Machine" - I would propel myself back to that perfect fall day. :)) **(Best on black)

When I took this shot last week - the days were warm - and the landscape was bathed in a kind of soft golden light as it waited for winter. Three days later - winter temperatures and a light covering of snow arrived, and pan-ice began floating in the rivers near our cabin. So with this image I bid a final farewell to 2012 autumn in Alaska.

Can you hear the silence in this early morning shot? It was broken only by the sounds of the birds as they called out to one another. I just happened to be in the right spot when the sunrise reflected on this remote wilderness pond. Wish I could have spent more time there - but my husband and I were headed off to the big city of Anchorage for our final shopping trip before winter arrives. After four days there - I couldn't wait to return to my quiet little corner in the boreal forest. **(Best on black)

Standing high above the Copper River, I could hear the water rushing across the landscape as it made its way to the outlet near Cordova, Alaska.
**The Copper River or Ahtna River (Ahtna Athabascan 'Atna) is a 300-mile (480 km) river in south-central Alaska in the United States. It drains a large region of the Wrangell Mountains and Chugach Mountains into the Gulf of Alaska. It is known for its extensive delta ecosystem, as well as for its prolific runs of wild salmon, which are among the most highly prized stocks in the world. It is the tenth largest river in the United States, as ranked by average discharge volume at its mouth. (Wikipedia) **(Best viewed full-screen)

I found this stone structure in the middle of a pasture way out in the Alaskan wilderness. I am still wondering who went through the trouble to arrange the stones so artfully - though few people will ever see them. Maybe they just had a need to create something. I did think it made for an interesting capture.

As I stood on the bank over looking a 200 foot drop, I realized that I really hate heights. I actually got butterflies in my tummy and I wanted to flee the edge that seemed to be falling away to the canyon below. The bridge you see in the distance looked daunting, as it is a narrow one lane wood planked monstrosity, 525 feet in length, and 238 feet above the river below. It was constructed in 1910, and my hubby was ready to cross it to see what was on the other side. So away we went . . .

As my husband and I drove ever deeper into the Alaskan wilderness, the road became more of a cow path than a highway. The scenery is spectacular and there isn't anyone around for many many miles - but if you meet another vehicle, you either squeeze by each other - or one driver pulls off as far as possible and waits. Happily we met no other vehicle. As you can see in this image - the day was flat, so I have promised myself to travel this road again when the weather and light are just right for photography.

Another beautiful autumn day when we left our cabin, but after a couple of hours of driving some remote back roads, the skies turned grey and turned the landscapes "flat". Undaunted - my trusty camera and I snapped away anyway. Over the next couple of days I will share some of my photos with you. **Lesson . . . you can't have perfect lighting every time you venture out. :((
I hope all of my Flicker friends are enjoying fall as much as I am. I can't wait to see all of your pictures.

Just about all of the leaves have been blown off of our trees by a series of storms that came to us via Siberia. But I found a few more images that I took recently, that I thought might be of interest to some of my Flickr friends. This particular shot begged to be done in HDR. (Okay - maybe I was just bored and needed to do something a tiny bit creative today.) Hope you enjoy . . .

It is pouring here today. After the rain . . .The hurricane force winds have stopped - the forest is sopping wet - the wildlife is curled up somewhere waiting for better weather - and I have a big pot of homemade chicken soup simmering on the stove. It is one of those days that we like to curl up on our 4 - season porch and watch the squirrels scamper about with the last of the mushrooms tucked in their mouths. The camp robbers come to the windows looking for a handout. It seems that they will eat just about anything, (unless it has chocolate or potatoes in it.) This is the quiet time of year for us. The chores are done - shelves stocked - woodshed is full - and we are ready to enjoy the transition from fall to winter.
I took this shot right after a rain, and I find that the fall colors are much more vivid on a cloudy wet day.
After the Rain . . ©

I took this shot two days ago, as we returned home from a shopping trip to Anchorage. It is a fairly good stretch of the Glenn Highway, as it crosses over the Nelchina River. When I cross over it next month - the leaves will be on the ground, and hunting season will be over. Maybe I will see moose and caribou on the move again. This was a hand held, through the windshield shot. If I had tried to get out and take a middle of the road shot here - I would have been run over by the many hunters breaking the speed limit on their way to their favorite hunting sites.
I saw this little fella along the very edge of an old two lane road. He was very bold and didn't seem to mind me talking to him. He seemed to say; "Take your darned pictures and get out of here. I'm getting ready for winter." So I did just that. (Below is a little information about him.)

**The Arctic ground squirrel lives in colonies and is prey to the Arctic Fox, wolverine, lynx, the Grizzly Bear, and eagles. It is one of the few Arctic animals, along with their close relatives the marmots and the un-related little brown bat that hibernate. In the summer it forages for tundra plants, seeds, and fruit to increase body fat for its winter hibernation. By late summer it begins to store food in its burrow so that in the spring it will have edible food until the new vegetation has grown. The burrows are lined with lichens, leaves, and musk ox hair.
During hibernation, its brain and core temperature can drop to just above freezing and its heartbeat drops. Peripheral, colonic, and blood temperatures become subzero by means of super cooling. Body temperatures drop as low as −2.9 °C (26.8 °F) (average −3 °C (27 °F), the lowest known naturally occurring core body temperature in mammals.

Mid-week in autumn, there are very few cars on the back-roads of Alaska. That means that I can literally stand in the middle of the road and capture scenes such as the one in this image. My husband is usually somewhere behind me in the truck, keeping his eyes on the road - and me. You never know what kind of wildlife is standing behind the brush just a few feet from you - so it's nice to have a living guardian angel standing by with a weapon.

There seems to be a lot of caribou in our boreal forest this fall. There is also a couple of thousand hunters roaming about in their big expensive four wheel ATV's in search of moose and caribou. This good sized bull was chasing after a few cows that had just run into the brush ahead of him. I sure hope that the small herd I saw, stays deep in the forest and away from hunters.
This image looks like it may have been taken in a tropical locale - but I took it a couple of hours ago in Glennallen, Alaska - north of the 60th parallel . Since the moose love to chomp on Mountain Ash trees in the winter - I do wonder if this one will survive. (Press L for best view)

***The berries of American mountain-ash are eaten by numerous species of birds and small mammals, including ruffed grouse, ptarmigans, sharp-tailed grouse, blue grouse, American robins, other thrushes, waxwings, jays, squirrels, and rodents.

American mountain-ash is a preferred browse for moose and white-tailed deer. Moose will eat foliage, twigs, and bark. Up to 80 percent of American mountain-ash stems were browsed by moose in control plots adjacent to exclosures on Isle Royale. Fishers, martens, snowshoe hares, and ruffed grouse also browse American mountain-ash. (Wikipedia)

Lovely Mountain Ash . . . Explored 9/10/12

(Wikipedia)
