Joanna Chapman-Smith's live show at Gattarossa, Piombino.
Stunning.
She's got an incredible voice and what's impressive is the control she's got over it. Her tunes, as long as you get the meaning, often balance between real life tales and humorous situations, with a bit of fairy powder.
Simple music, as I stated a couple of days ago while talking to a friend o' mine, which forces you to be sharp and never smudge a chord. Oh, and she doesn't. She sings in a high pitched but soft voice and plays, apart from her lovely Larrivée acoustic guitar (yeah, I noticed that!), some weird gizmos as a stomp box, some copper pipes and a voice bender stuffed into an old telephone receiver. Weird enough to freeze your attention and slowly get you flooded by her swinging smile.
Her new album, "Contraries", is simply beautiful. Somewhat new among the vast universe of folk/acoustic music, a small treasure chest where jewels like "For good" and "Tactile worlds" are silently hidden.
Now she's touring Europe along with Mat Martin, a guitarist/banjoist/super-chordophone-player who also plays tenor guitar and clawhammer banjo. A pleasure to listen to.
If you can, please trust me and buy her records, as you won't find much on the Tube or elsewhere.
But believe me, it's definitely worth it.

C'è chi va a Roppongi o Omotesando per cercare le ragazze in tiro, chi va a Shibuya per le cosplayer e i tipi eccentrici; c'è chi a Osaka gira per America Mura perché tutto sommato l'atmosfera hip hop lascia respirare un po' di States anche in Giappone; c'è chi percorre incessantemente le strade di Gion a Kyoto nella speranza di vedere una geisha vera.
Io stavo solo girando per Tsukiji, la zona del mercato del pesce, e onestamente mi aspettavo un mucchio di foto di strada piene di vecchiette gobbe e bottegai vocianti.
Non lei.
Non lì.
Tsukiji-gyaru, la ragazza di Tsukiji. A volte la magia succede e basta.

Someone goes to roppongi or Omotesando looking for stylish chicks, some other go to Shibuya because of cosplayer girls and freakish guys; someone walks along America Mura in Osaka 'cause that hip hop atmosphere lets ya breathe a puff of States even in Japan; someone endlessly walks trough Gion streets in Kyoto hoping to see a real geisha.
I was just wandering in Tsukiji, the fish market area, and I honestly didn't expect anything better than street shots full of hunched old ladies and shouting shopkeepers.
Not her.
Not there.

Ai tempi nostri l'amore si esprime così, o almeno lo si pensa: attaccando lucchetti ovunque. Qui, sulla Via dell'Amore alle Cinqueterre l'amministrazione c'ha messo su un business, vendendo i lucchetti con il logo preinciso; comunque la fantasia della gente supera ogni mercato e si arriva anche ai lucchetti a combinazione, alle catenelle e ai pezzetti di stoffa.
Per uno scassinatore come me la tentazione è sempre fortissima. Un bel casino resistere.

Nowadays love is expressed this way, or this is at least a common feeling: hanging locks everywhere. Here, on the Love Path in Cinqueterre the local administration set up a business selling locks with a cheesy logo; however people's fantasy goes beyond and you can find combination locks, chains and rags.
To a lockpicker as I am, the temptation is always very strong. Hard to resist.

L'edificio di collect point, catena di abbigliamento "fashion casual".
Proprio di fianco al fotografatissimo Audi Forum, il delirante edificio in vetro su Meiji-dori, offre qualche spunto fotografico in più dell'"iceberg" (come chiamano appunto l'Audi Forum Building) se:
a) hai una medio formato e ti ci piazzi frontalmente
b) è una giornata limpida e dal cielo azzurro
c) ci trovi parcheggiata di fronte un'autogru giallo cromo ;-)

Just next to the overphotographed Audi Forum, the foolish glass building along Meiji-dori, it offers a couple more photographic hints than the "iceberg" (that's just how the Audi Forum Building is called) if:
a) you got a medium format camera and you're facing it frontally
b) it's a crystal clear day with a blue sky
c) you happen to find a chrome yellow tow car parked in front of it ;-)

Il 45° piano del Palazzo del Governo Metropolitano di Tokyo offre interessanti spunti cinematografici. Un po' Wim Wenders, un po' Ridley Scott, un briciolo di poesia alla Sofia Coppola e una vista mozzafiato su tutta Tokyo. Da lì, a bocca aperta, l'occhio cade sul Tokyo Plaza Hotel.
Vi ricordate Lost in Translation? Sembra quasi di vederli, Bob e Charlotte.

The 45th floor of Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building offers interesting movie hints. A bit of Wim Wenders, some Ridley Scott, crumbles of poetry a la Sofia Coppola and a breathtaking sight over the entire Tokyo. From there, open-mouthed, the eyes fall upon the Tokyo Plaza Hotel.
Do you remember Lost in Translation? You almost feel Bob and Charlotte.

Lido di Camaiore, il pontile, ottobre 2010.
Nelle giornate di vento e di freddo la luce sulle vetrate si riflette come se avesse qualcosa da dirti.
E anche io, da architetto, foto di architettura non ne faccio quasi mai.
I tavoli vuoti ti lasciano sospeso tra le atmosfere parigine e la desolazione del volto nascosto della Versilia, che sinceramente preferisco di gran lunga a quello chiassoso della villeggiatura estiva.
Io odio la villeggiatura.
L'inutile chiassoso inconcludente brulicare dei villeggianti. Il loro giocare al ruolo di quello che si diverte perché la consuetudine lascia loro credere che se-fai-così-allora-ti-stai-divertendo.
Ma in ottobre i pontili la raccontano giusta, svelano, accolgono, ti lasciano guardare un mare che d'estate non esiste, e l'assenza diventa una presenza.
Attendo in gloria gennaio, febbraio, la pioggia furiosa e il ponente che spazza via tutto e tutti.
Chissà che non mi capiti di scattare qualche altra foto di architettura...

Venerdi 5 Febbraio 2010, linea 1 della Metropolitana di Milano.
E' pieno di gente, ma sono salito al capolinea, così ho un posto a sedere, in fondo al vagone. Questi vecchie carrozze hanno i finestrini a ribalta, tra l'una e l'altra. E' per questo che si può vedere dall'altra parte.
E' per questo che la vedo.
Non è come sui treni, qui in metro la gente è quasi tutta seria. Anche lei è seria, avvolta nel cappotto mentre guarda di fronte a sé, come se avesse il Signor Freddo come interlocutore.
Io scendo al Duomo; tutti quanti scendono, al Duomo, penso tra me e me.
Poi arriviamo a largo Cairoli. Si alza.
Guarda: ha uno zaino perfettamente identico al mio!
E potrebbe essere un motivo buono per scambiare un sorriso, così, per gioco.
Piazza Cordusio. Le porte si aprono. Scende. Neanche si volta, sempre seria e bellissima. La folla la inghiotte, la metro riparte verso piazza Duomo.
Fuori nevica, il mio interlocutore è il Signor Freddo.

It's crowdy, but I got on at the end of the line, so I'm sitting, in a corner of the car. These old coaches have pivoting windows at the end. That's why you can look at the other side, through them.
That's why I see her.
It's not like on the railway, here most of the people are serious. And she's serious too, wrapped in her coat while looking in front of her, as she was talking with Mr. Cold.
I get off at Duomo; evryone gets off, at Duomo, I think by myself.
We arrive at largo Cairoli. She gets up.
Look: she has a backpack and it's just like mine!
And it could be a nice reason to exchange a smile, just for fun.
Cordusio Square. The doors open. She gets off. Without even turning her head, still serious and gorgeous. The crowd swallows her, the subway leaves again to Duomo.
Outside it's snowing, I talk with Mr. Cold.
