Orange Moth (Angerona prunaria)

This, unfortunately, is a not so good shot of one of my mothing highlights of the year. I'd never seen an Orange Moth before this one appeared at a light trap during a moth night at Chambers Farm Wood, Lincs, in July. Aptly named and would have been a striking bright orange when fresh.

It's a bit of a tatty specimen, but got me just a little excited!

linanjon have a less tatty example here and there's a lovely fresh bright one here.

Newborn pup, sheltered from other nearby seals by its mother. It didn't feed for a while after birth; I was expecting this to happen pretty much straight away. Another cow got a bit close at one point and the mother chased it off. The whole sequence was wonderful to watch and I feel extremely lucky to have been there at just the right time. Huge thanks to the mother for managing to fit it all in before the sun finally dipped behind the sand dunes :-)

PS. This was one of the few times I wished I'd had a tripod. The 300mm lens isn't heavy, but my arms didn't half ache by the time the pup was born because I didn't dare put the camera down in case I missed something!

A lovely little bee returns to its burrow and has to spend a few minutes digging out grains of sand. In this patch of sand there are many holes and watching these bees coming and going is a great way to pass time (and get puzzled glances from the occasional passer by... I must look very strange lying down looking at what appears to be nothing!). One of my annual 'must see' things.

Another of my mothing highlights of 2010. I was standing near one of the moth traps at Chambers Farm Wood in July when I looked down and saw that a moth I didn't recognise had alighted on my leg. I swiftly popped it in a pot for a closer look - and had it identified as a Tissue by some moffers who did recognise it.

A nice one to see - and another I'm unlikely to find in my garden.

A couple of photos of Mum and my daughter from a lovely day out at Rimac in June. The pair of them went off walking (and seeing how long they could make a bag of Haribo last!). I pottered along with Dad, looking for insects and stuff.

Once the 'shoulders' were through things happened very quickly and the pup started to slither out.

Yesterday the weather was gloriously sunny, so I popped up the coast to the seal colony at Donna Nook. Despite the crowds I had a superb day watching the seals and took plenty of photos of them.

Shortly before I headed home I noticed that a heavily pregnant Grey Seal was becoming very restless and birth looked imminent, so I watched and waited.

Word quickly spread and lots of people came to see the event. I suspect mine won't be the only photos appearing on Flickr!
