Tomorrowland

I did a shot very similar to this in the past, but I wanted to do one a little less fishy. I like this one quite a bit more as it is more focused and leaves out less junk on the sides. Also the color rendition and dynamic range are a bit nicer thanks to the wonderful D800.

In other news I posted my first blog post in quite a while. This post deals a bit with my process for processing photos. I did a Splash Mountain photo once before before but thanks to a failure by me in actually photographing it, processing was a total beast and the end result less than ideal. This night Magic Kingdom was open til 1am and one of the first things we headed to do during EMH was ride Splash Mountain. Splash Mountain DOWN. OK, we'll ride Big Thunder Mountain, there's no wait. We get to the bottom of the ramp, boom, announcement: Big Thunder Mountain is down (well not in those words but yea). My wife is getting irritated at this point but I figure I'll make the best and go take a photo of Splash Mountain. While I'm taking it I realize how great it is (photographically) that it's down because that means the flash gun at the top of the mountain isn't going off constantly. Take the good with the bad I suppose. Unrelated, we wandered over to ride Winnie the Pooh (one of my wife's favorite rides) and it was also down!!!!!! Fortunately as we were looking through the gift shop it came back up and we were able to ride. We actually ended up spending most of the EMH just doing photos after being discouraged by the rides being down. Sucked then, but now I got some great photos to edit! This is EPCOT

I'm a day late for Monorail Monday. Hopefully everyone will let it slide just this once as I was still fine tuning this shot. The wife and I went on this most recent trip solely to not miss out on the Flower & Garden Festival. I had never gotten to photograph it before and didn't want to miss yet another year. Once the trip was set in stone I started really thinking about some of the shots I wanted to get on this trip. This shot was priority numero uno on my list of shots to get. Thanks to the Disney Park Manager mentioned in the previous post I had plenty of time to setup and take this shot. I setup and while people trailed out of the parks I patiently waited as monorails came by and I captured them. I actually had 4 chances (though I ended up using shots from monorail 1 and monorail 2) while I waited for everyone to clear out and take my final shots of the park empty. I finally had a clearing and was able to snap off my bracket literally seconds before another group of people walked into frame. One of them being some dude with some epic Really Right Stuff gear /jealous. I packed up and wandered back further into Epcot for some more Spaceship Earth shooting. Mission accomplished!

P.S. If you only ever view one of my photos on large, let it be this one.

Technical: 5 shot bracket + 2 shots for the monorails. 10 adjustment layers, 6 layer masks.

Space, The Flower Frontier

One theme of this trip was Disney security quickly closing out the areas after park closing. This of course is disheartening for a photographer like myself, but this particular night was the worst. I shot Illuminations from the fountain and immediately rushed over to get some shots of Test Track and Mission Space. I spent about 3-4 minutes shooting Test Track and quickly moved over to Mission Space. I'm setup and shooting in about 25 seconds when I see a Disney manager heading my way. I know shooting in this area is about to come to an end (so quickly too =\) but I'm already 2 shots into a 5 shot bracket and on #4 by the time he get's to me.

Disney Park Manager : Are you with Disney?
Me: Uuuuuh, no?
Disney Park Manager : This area is closed, you have to leave.
At this point I'm about 3 seconds into my 5th and final shot for the bracket which lasts 30 seconds.
Me: Ok, can I just finish this last exposure that has 20 seconds?
Disney Park Manager : No
I look at my wife who is with me like is this guy kidding?

So of course I just stood there and let the exposure finish anyway without saying another word, picked up my tripod and walked out. Bonus: Dude followed right behind us til he made it to the bathrooms where he trailed off to go make sure the woman with her 2 children at the restroom exited the area immediately as it was "closed."

I'm sure people will probably fall on both sides of the coin on this one, but I can't ever remember a time when I've asked to finish a shot as an area was closing and was told basically to leave immediately. Come on dude, 20 seconds isn't going to kill you. I then proceeded to the front of Epcot and shot around Spaceship Earth for over an hour more as people continued to trail out of the park.

Rise Dramatically To Your Feet

This trip I tried to really shoot shots that are outside of my comfort zone (aka night time ultra wide angle) to try and get some really different shots for myself this time. To be honest I failed more than I succeeded but that's how we grow as photographers. And I did still get some shots I really like such as this one.

I'm back! Finally made it back to Disney and what a perfect way to start off the trip with the limited time magic May the Fourth Be With You. I took a ton of pics of the party (and in general) but I'm still wading through them. After a bit of debate I decided to go with a 16x9 crop of this shot for a more cinematic feel. Just 4 days (not counting today) until we're back at Disney and what perfect timing with the recently announced May the 4th Be With You Limited Time Magic event. I'm obviously getting pretty stoked to be back and found an older shot from a few trips back I never edited and wanted to share. This gave me a good chance to get back in the Disney editing swing of things as I haven't done much lately relating to my Disney photography. We'll finally be back to Disney in t-minus 11 days. It's a shorter trip than usual (only 4 days) but we didn't want to miss the Flower Festival this year. Of course I'll be doing alot of photography and have several shots already planned. Can't wait!

I wanted to up front thank everyone who has followed my Photostream over the past few years. The time has come for me to take a break however. I'll still be around to like and comment on everyone's photos but my posting a photo a day is over, at least for now. I do still have some great photos to share and if I can find the time I'll try to share some of those from time to time. The thing is I have more important things in my life right now that I need to focus on and the time and effort required to have a quality photo each day is something I can't dedicate my time to for the foreseeable future. I hope this is a good hold over photo til I return. Thanks again, to everyone.

The Temple of Heaven's Closeup

Hooray! I found another night shot to process. Big surprise that it's another Temple of Heaven shot. I think this confirms I shot more photos of the Temple than any other structure on my last Disney visit. As always thanks for looking, and everyone have a great weekend!

Here Kitty Kitty

My last Pirates of the Caribbean shot I tried out a new technique and was very very pleased with the outcome so I decided to carry it over to another Pirates shot and I think I'm going to use it on all my upcoming Pirates shot as well. In the new technique I really focus on creating realistic lighting in the shot. One of the biggest problems with PotC is that while it looks great in person it looks terrible straight out of camera. Then if you get rid of the awful color lighting you're left with a dull desaturated lifeless image. My new technique fixes that (I think). Feedback welcome! Thanks for looking!

Cinderella's Castle and the Stars

Today's shot is a redo, but one I felt necessary as the original was some time ago and overall just dull compared to how I process now. Plus I was able to pull out way more stars.

Secondly, today I am releasing my 2nd wallpaper pack! This wallpaper pack is themed for Spaceship Earth and includes 3 Spaceship Earth wallpapers sized at 1920x1200. You can download the pack by clicking here.

Write Like an Egyptian

And queue The Bangles, LOL! These first few scenes on Spaceship Earth in my opinion are the most difficult. I'm not sure if it's intentional, coincidence, or my imagination, but it seems the lighting gets brighter and brighter as your time vehicle takes you through the ages. Perhaps this is to symbolize how we as a human race have become more enlightened as we progress through time? More likely it's just my imagination. Plus that very last scene is super dark so I guess that ruins my theory! Thanks for looking!

We Have To Go Back - Back to the Future

I guess this will do it for my Carousel of Progress shots for now. This is the only scene I hadn't posted thus far and it just might be my favorite. Hopefully on my next trip I can grab some other bits of the scenes I missed. Also since I had to go wide to capture more of the scene I actually employed the use of top and bottom black bars to frame the shot to maintain the 3x2 ratio. I dig the kind of cinematic/film look it gives the shot. Thanks for looking!
