The invention of the modern piano is credited to Bartolomeo Cristofori of Padua, Italy, who was employed by Prince Ferdinand de Medici as the Keeper of the Instruments. He was an expert harpsichord maker and was well acquainted with the previous body of knowledge on stringed keyboard instruments. It is not known exactly when Cristofori first built a piano. An inventory made by his employers, the Medici family, indicates the existence of a piano by the year 1700; another document of doubtful authenticity indicates a date of 1698.The three Cristofori pianos that survive today date from the 1720s

Further along, at the foot of Escalier Casse-Cou (Breakneck Steps) and along one of the oldest streets in North America, is Fresque du Petit-Champlain. It depicts milestones in the history of Cap-Blanc, Québec City's working-class waterfront neighborhood, from the beginnings of New France until the present day.

Trois-Pistoles is a town in and the seat of the Les Basques Regional County Municipality within the Bas-Saint-Laurent region of Quebec. It is also the county seat. The town is located on the south shore of the Saint Lawrence River.

A ferry crosses the river to Les Escoumins on the north shore. The port facilities are also used by fishing boats and scuba divers.

The town is said to have been named for a silver goblet worth three pistoles, an old French coin, that was lost in the river in the 17th century.

The town is well-known for being the site of the University of Western Ontario's annual French-language immersion summer program since 1932. The program, Explore, is the oldest such French-language immersion program in Canada.

According to the Canada 2001 Census:

* Dwellings: 1,718
* Area: 7.66 km2 (2.96 sq mi)
* Density (persons per km² or sq mi): 474.3 /km2 (1,228 /sq mi)

* Trois-Pistoles is also the name of a beer from Unibroue
