Wild Garlic taken at the Welsh Harp Nature Reserve.

Allium ursinum – known as ramsons, buckrams, wild garlic, broad-leaved garlic, wood garlic, bear leek or bear's garlic – is a wild relative of chives native to Europe and Asia.[1] The Latin name is due to the brown bear's taste for the bulbs and its habit of digging up the ground to get at them; they are also a favorite of wild boar.

Male Orange Tip butterfly (Anthocharis cardamines). They were a lot more obliging today & opened their wings for me. I took this with my 18-200 lens as I couldn`t get very close.

A happy Jay (He looks like he`s smiling). Taken with a huge zoom through the open car window hence the noise. A pair of them are nesting in a tree next to the lake & making good use of the old roots dumped there. The bokeh was a bonus.

A Near Tragedy

Taken on my second trip to the lake yesterday (With the right lens). Someone has dumped a load of concrete, rubble bricks & roots at the edge of the water. This little fellow got himself tangled up in the roots & fell into a gap between the lumps of concrete. I managed to move one bit but then of course I had Mum & Dad hissing & honking at me. In the end I think they realised I was helping & I managed to pull the roots gently & luckily he came out with them. He was unharmed & quickly joined his siblings who were standing quietly watching & then swam away with his parents. The worry is that it will probably happen again.

Canadian goslings taken at a local lake. I put the wrong lens on the camera so it was all a bit hit & miss! These are the offspring of the pregnant goose I posted earlier, there are only three this time. There may have been more but judging by the debris some lunatic had been throwing stones & bricks at them.

Carnaby Street, London. Taken for a Transportation comp. My daughter-in-law Sue is on the right transporting my grandaughter Edie.

Historically, Carnaby Street derives its name from Karnaby House, located to its east and originally erected in 1683. It is not now known why the house was so called. The street was probably laid out in 1685 or 1686. First appearing in the ratebooks in 1687, the street was almost completely built up by 1690 with small houses. A market was developed in the 1820s;[1] in his novel, Sybil (1845), Benjamin Disraeli refers to "a carcase-butcher famous in Carnaby-market".[2]
In 1934, Amy Ashwood Garvey and Sam Manning opened the Florence Mills Social Club,[3] a jazz club which became a gathering spot for supporters of Pan-Africanism.[4]
1958 saw the first boutique, His Clothes, opened in Carnaby Street by John Stephen (after his shop in Beak Street burned down)[5] and was soon followed by I Was Lord Kitchener's Valet, Kleptomania, Mates, Ravel, and others.
By the 1960s, Carnaby Street proved popular for followers of both the Mod and hippie styles. Many independent fashion boutiques, and designers such as Mary Quant, Marion Foale and Sally Tuffin,[6] Lord John, Merc, Take Six, and Irvine Sellars were located in Carnaby Street as well as various underground music bars such as the Roaring Twenties in the surrounding streets. With bands such as Small Faces, The Who, and Rolling Stones appearing in the area to work (with the legendary Marquee Club located round the corner in Wardour Street), shop, and socialize, it became one of the coolest destinations associated with the Swinging London of the 1960s.
The Carnaby Street contingent of Swinging London stormed into North American and international awareness with the April 15, 1966 publication of Time magazine's cover[7] and article that extolled this street's role:
“Perhaps nothing illustrates the new swinging London better than narrow, three-block-long Carnaby Street, which is crammed with a cluster of the 'gear' boutiques where the girls and boys buy each other clothing...[8]”
In October 1973, the Greater London Council pedestrianised Carnaby Street. Vehicular access is restricted between 11 am and 8 pm. A comparison of before and after number of pedestrians entering the pedestrianised area indicated a 30% increase in pedestrian flows into Carnaby Street as a result of the pedestrianisation.[9] A campaign commenced early in 2010 to call for a similar exercise to be undertaken in the adjacent area of Soho.[10]
There are two Westminster City Council green plaques on Carnaby Street: the first can be found at 1 Carnaby Street and is dedicated to fashion entrepreneur John Stephen, who was responsible for beginning the Mod fashion revolution here. The second plaque, located at 52/55 Carnaby Street, is dedicated to the Mod pop group The Small Faces and their manager Don Arden.
