Hello Flickr friends! These are the last of my Nikon D90 shots taken last year....this is "little orphan" again as you can see poised on top of the garbage bins, his favorite spot since I found him! I guess he is debating whether or not he should jump, will he make it or not? Well I finally have a new camera ....the Canon 7D which I absolutely love! I am thinking about also getting the new Nikon D600! Thanks for dropping by!

Back to shooting waterdrops. This was taken in the same gold beaten vase as my previous waterdrop shot this time bouncing some green color on the water's surface to get the "rainbow" effect. Just used the built-in flash, no filters here. This method is very easy and not messy at all. I hate messy shoots! :)

Thanks in advance for your kind visits and comments! Very much appreciated!
Passage to Shangri-La~City in the Clouds

TravellingTheBLU26 posted a photo:

This "Shangri-La" is my backyard, a view from the terrace!

Shangri-La is a fictional place described in the 1933 novel Lost Horizon by British author James Hilton. In the book, "Shangri-La" is a mystical, harmonious valley, gently guided from a lamasery, enclosed in the western end of the Kunlun Mountains. Shangri-La has become synonymous with any earthly paradise but particularly a mythical Himalayan utopia — a permanently happy land, isolated from the outside world. In the novel Lost Horizon, the people who live at Shangri-La are almost immortal, living years beyond the normal lifespan and only very slowly aging in appearance. The word also evokes the imagery of exoticism of the Orient. In the ancient Tibetan scriptures, existence of seven such places is mentioned as Nghe-Beyul Khimpalung.

The use of the term Shangri-La is frequently cited as a modern reference to Shambhala, a mythical kingdom in Tibetan Buddhist tradition, which was sought by Eastern and Western explorers; Hilton was also inspired by then-current National Geographic articles on Tibet, which referenced the legend.

Shangri-La is often used in a similar context to "Garden of Eden", to represent a paradise hidden from modern man. It is sometimes used as an analogy for a life-long quest or something elusive that is much sought. For a man who spends his life obsessively looking for a cure to a disease, such a cure could be said to be that man's "Shangri-La". It also might be used to represent perfection that is sought by man in the form of love, happiness, or Utopian ideals. It may be used in this context alongside other mythical and famous examples of somewhat similar metaphors such as The Holy Grail, El Dorado and The Fountain of Youth.

Politically and geographically, the independent and previously independent nations isolated from the West, such as Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan, Sikkim, Tuva, Mongolia, the Tocharian Tushara Kingdom of the Mahābhārata and the Han Dynasty outpost Dunhuang have each been termed Shangri-Las.

Look what I found yesterday! I went to throw out the garbage and here is this little kitten just laying back relaxing on top of the garbage bin ...you can see the garbage bags behind him (no doubt he was full as he had already busted all the bags for food)! I decided to take some pictures and went to get the camera not knowing if he would still be there when I got back....do you think he was afraid of the camera???? NOT AT ALL just look of him!!! So I called him Little Orfan. Wonder where his mother is????

Well flickr friends, here is my 2nd attempt at the strawberry dive! Actually this one was taken outside (for the added light) with a black cloth for background.

The story behind the shoot: I really had planned to shoot this 2 days ago, collected all the equipment: spoon, strawberries, black cloth for the background AND the milk but due to one thing or another I just didn't get around to it. When I finally decided to shoot this the milk had gone bad and most of the strawberries were rotten...anyway I decided to shoot anyway gosh....bad mistake! What a lot of cleaning up afterwards and the SMELL!!!! Ugggggg!! Lazy me! Never again!!

Any comments would be helpful as you all know. I think this one is a little sharper in detail (well the first version was a tomato not a strawberry) and IMO the splash here isn't as dramatically pleasing as the 1st version! Thanks for your visits and comments, helpful suggestions in advance! Always appreciated!

Sorry for the cliche but this song just came to mind when I saw this wonderful scene yesterday morning. It's funny but when I woke up in the morning and looked out the window it wasn't a big deal...there wasn't a great sunrise, not even the hint of fog but woooah, just one hour later the fog had blown in over the valley from the Tiber and into my backyard together with the rays of the rising sun! When I walked past my window I made a double take... the rays of light were everywhere! I grabbed the only camera on hand at the moment. (Rik's Sony A200...wish I had my NIKON but I would have had to run back upstairs and I didn't want to lose any time!)) This time I didn't bother to remove the power lines...maybe they add to the scene I don't know..
LIGHT CUBE

TravellingTheBLU26 posted a photo:

What is it?:

Watermelon cubes! (with a light shooting up through the middle)! (idea based on "sugar cube light" by ab_noid!)

Why watermelon?

I dunno...it's red, it has a transparent look to it, it could be cut into cubes, it was handy...I'm nuts...

How I did this?

You need a shiny black surface with a hole in it. In my case I used an old CD/DVD case. I cut the watermelon into cubes and placed them around the hole to form a cube. For the top layer I placed a thin square clear piece of plastic so as to place the roof. Tricky...they keep falling down. Placed a small flashlight under the cube where the hole is in such a way as to have the max amount of light shining up into the cube. Try different angles for the best light. Kinda messy...on my messy scale of 1-5 it's a 2. I did a few shots till the cubes (which are both wet AND sticky) fell on my laptop and that was the end of the experiment!! Hope you all have a nice day till my next experiment.....

Thanks for all your visits and comments!!

A hedgehog in my garden!!! And he's very very shy!"

TravellingTheBLU26 posted a photo:

This is the biggest "riccio" (hedgehog or Urchin) I have seen yet here in my garden. I have a lot of space and I am near a park where they are common so they often come wandering through my garden. Usually they are baby riccios but this one must have been an adult? It let me come very close but every time it saw the camera it curled up in a ball or turned it's face away. Rather shy I would say!

What is the difference between a porcupine and a hedgehog?

They are only alike superficially. Hedgehogs are insectivores and porcupines are rodents. Hedgehogs feed mainly on insects while Porcupines (in North America) eat tree bark and buds in the high branches and will chew up and destroy tools and things you touch with sweaty hands since they crave salt, and love to gnaw. They will chew the wires and hoses under the hood in your car, so beware. Hedgehogs are not found in America, and are just harmless. Porcupines will also swat animals (like your pet dog) in the face with their tails, if they get close to them, and the quills burrow themselves in. A vet will have to painfully pull those barbed quills out or they will keep working further ways inwards, the dog may get a bad infection from them and die. Porcupines won't attack you but give them their space, to stay safe. They can also grow a good bit bigger than hedgehogs. Even bigger ones live in Africa.

Hedgehogs will roll into a ball when in danger, so that makes it harder for the predator to try to bite. They have very short quills that can still poke but do not come out. Hedgehogs are much smaller and less dangerous than porcupines.

Is it true Hedgehogs can eat poisonous snakes, bees and wasps?

Yes! They can eat lots of things. Hedgehogs hunt at night and feed mainly on insects, but they also eat snails, mice, birds, frogs, snakes and lizards. Hedgehogs are also one of the few mammals that attack and eat bees and wasps. The stings of these insects appear to have no effect on the hedgehogs.

Hedgehogs have even been known to eat poisonous snakes! The snake’s fangs cannot penetrate the hedgehog’s sharp spines and reach its skin. The hedgehog waits until the snake gets tired in its attempts to bite it. Then the hedgehog grabs the snake and breaks its backbone. Finally, the hedgehog eats the snake—poisonous glands and all.Hedgehogs have a high level of immunity to viper venom.

Do Hedgehogs Really Spit on Themselves?

Yes, hedgehogs do spit on themselves, but nobody really knows why. Hedgehogs will lick a rock or a piece of wood to start the saliva flowing. Then they swing their heads back and forth, spitting freely. Hedgehogs use their tongues to coat their spines with the spit. This startling behavior may continue for twenty minutes.

Some animal experts have ideas about the spitting. Some say the saliva the hedgehog produces may drive away predators. Others believe it attracts hedgehogs during the mating season. Still others say the saliva works against parasites—usually ticks, fleas, or small worms—that feed on a hedgehog’s body.

How Do Hedgehogs Communicate?

Hedgehogs have several ways of expressing themselves. A content hedgehog will chirp, squeak, or whistle softly. When a hedgehog screams, it means it’s in danger or in serious pain. When a hedgehog coughs, it does not mean it’s sick. Rather, the hedgehog is sending out a warning to other animals to stay away from its territory or food source.

Watching hedgehogs in captivity shows that they also communicate with their spines. If there is a noise nearby, the hedgehog’s spines will stand up straight in the direction of the disturbance. When it raises the spines on its forehead, the hedgehog is shocked or cautious. If a hedgehog trusts a person, it keeps its spines flat and even allows that person to pet it without being harmed.

Do Hedgehogs Make Good Pets?

You may be surprised to know that the answer is yes. Hedgehogs can be tamed easily and can be as enjoyable as pets as dogs or cats. A pet hedgehog can even be trained to stand on its hind legs.

Another good reason for having a pet hedgehog could be pest control. Hedgehogs can help keep houses and gardens free of bothersome insects and other pests.

I like this quote: “Flowers have an expression of countenance as much as men and animals. Some seem to smile; some have a sad expression; some are pensive and diffident; others again are plain, honest and upright, like the broad-faced sunflower and the hollyhock.” Henry Ward Beecher
And Yup, I have these big daddys in my garden too...not easy to get a good shot of though since they are sooooo tall! Dear friends, wish you all the perfect weekend full of sun-kissed light!
I don't have a dedicated macro lens here just a Hoya macro filter and a lot of patience. I'm telling you this little guy just can't keep still! After running around like mad all over the flower petal and driving me near crazy he stopped for a sec or 2 and posed....can you figure that???
