This image was from a trip to Point Reyes National Seashore last spring of 2010. Since this was my first trip to Point Reyes, a stop at the sunken boat "Point Reyes" in Inverness is mandatory. I have seen some amazing images of this boat, and many of them were shot at the edge of light—both sunset and sunrise, and also at night with some really nice star trails. Well, it was a bit after 9 AM when we got there so no dramatic lighting but tonemapping my handheld bracketed shots added some interesting details and colors back to this image.

Point Reyes 2010_2

This image was from a trip to Point Reyes National Seashore last spring of 2010. I snapped this image while walking in disappointment from the top of the hill where park rangers were forced to close the gate leading to the lighthouse. All those white water heading for the beaches mean the winds were blowing well above 25 mph, hence the reason for closing access to the lighthouse. Better safe than sorry, but what a disappointment! The next trip was already being planned when we got to the car.

Point Reyes 2010_3

This image was from a trip to Point Reyes National Seashore last spring of 2010. After enjoying our pack lunch at the lighthouse parking lot, we headed to Drake's Beach then checked out South Beach and North Beach. This image is from North Beach, our last stop before heading back. We stuck around as long as we did because we were hoping the wind will slow down enough for the park rangers to open the gate to the lighthouse. Nope, did not happen on that day.

Chimney Rock 2010_1

This image was from a trip to Point Reyes National Seashore last fall of 2010. We had just finished shooting the lighthouse and other buildings but still had plenty of light left in the day so we drove to the eastern tip of the peninsula—a place called Chimney Rock. The hike from the parking lot to the top and end of the trail at Chimney Rock was just over a mile, and the views are truly spectacular. Drake's Bay is on the left and the vast Pacific Ocean is on the right. This image is looking west-northwest from Chimney Rock, and Point Reyes Lighthouse is somewhere at the other end of this peninsula.

Point Reyes Lighthouse 2010_2

This image was from a trip to Point Reyes National Seashore last fall of 2010. The sun was setting and we were hurrying down from Chimney Rock, hoping to return to the Point Reyes Lighthouse Information Center where we could setup to shoot the sunset. We were too late because by the time we had parked again and did the quarter-mile uphill hike to the Information Center, it was already quite dark. The wind was blowing fast and hard at the top of the hill, perhaps 35-40 mph, so tripod photography was a bit shaky. Although it appeared there was still plenty of light, I was actually using my headlight to setup the tripod and camera. My 25-second exposure rendered the choppy ocean waters so smooth, they almost look like clouds.

Point Reyes Lighthouse 2010_1

This image was from a trip to Point Reyes National Seashore last fall of 2010. I think we were done touring and shooting the lighthouse here, and I was slowly making my way up the 300 plus steps of this very long concrete stairs. Thank God there were two cages midway where the out-of-shape, like me, can rest and catch their breath. I used the two stops to change lenses and shoot some more.

First lit in 1870, the Point Reyes lighthouse was automated in 1975. The sixteen-sided pyramidal tower is 37 feet tall and constructed from cast iron with brick lining. The first order fresnel lens in the lantern has a range of 24 miles—a distance that stretches a few miles beyond the Farallon Islands.

This is inside the fog signal building adjacent to the lantern tower. The building contains the fog signal horns, horn pumps, auxiliary power and switching equipment, diesel-powered standby generator, boiler and two small rooms at the western entrance that might have been the office and shop.

The fog signal horns are located at either side of the green double doors.

From the parking lot it's a 0.4 mile uphill walk to the visitor center, then it's another 308 steps downhill to the light station (about 275 feet change in elevation). This is the view from the bottom of the 308-step stairs looking up towards the visitor center.
