The Honours of Scotland

Brownie Bear posted a photo:

The Honours of Scotland are the Crown Jewels of the Kingdom of Scots. They are the oldest Royal Regalia in the whole of the British Isles and Channel Islands. The gold of the Crown is derived from the Crown made for the coronation of Robert I (Robert the Bruce) as King of Scots in 1306. The Sword of State was a gift from the Pope to King James IV King of Scots 1488-1312. The Crown was remodelled for James V, King of Scots 1513-1542. The last King of Scots to be crowned properly with the Regalia was KIng Charles II in 1651.

During the Civil War the Honours were hidden from Cromwell's Army. The English Crown Jewels were broken up at this time. When the Monarchy was restored in 1660 the Honours returned to Edinburgh and were used at meetings of the old Scottish Parliament ~ The Three Estates. The Sceptre was used to signify the Royal Assent to Acts of the Three Estates.

The last use of the Sceptre to enact legislation was the Act of Union 1707 which created Great Britain by uniting the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Scots. It is recorded that Lord Seafield said "There's an end of an old song." as the Sceptre touched the Act of Union thus abolishing The Three Estates and the independent Kingdom of Scots.

The Honours were wrapped up and placed inside an enormous oak chest. The entry to the Crown Room was then bricked over and forgotten about. Rumours circulated that the Honours had been taken to England in secret. Sir Walter Scott decided to try and pinpoint what exactly had happened to the Honours. It was as a result of his endeavours that the Crown Room was rediscovered in the 1820's/1830's. The Honours were discovered intact inside the chest that they had been left in when the Three Estates were disbanded in 1707.

The Honours of Scotland were wrapped up and hidden for the duration of the Great War (1914-1918) and the Second World War (1939-1945). On both of these occasions they were bricked up somewhere within Edinburgh Castle Rock.

In 1953 the present Queen attended St Giles Cathedral for a National Service of Thanksgiving after her Coronation in Westminster Abbey in London. The highpoint of the Ceremony involved the presentation of the Crown to the Queen. The Queen momentarily took its weight. The Crown is apparently too fragile to be worn. The Queen was dressed considerably more informally than was expected. (The Scottish Nobility were wearing their Ermine Robes.) The Queen wore a blue velvet suit with matching hat, black shoes with a black leather handbag. The official painting of the occasion accurately depicts the Queen's outfit but omits the handbag.

Church of Scotland, Crown Court, Russell Street, Covent Garden

Brownie Bear posted a photo:

Crown Court is the oldest Church of Scotland Parish in England. The Parish has existed since 1718 and was founded to provide a place of worship for Scots moving down to London. The Union of Scotland and England to form Great Britain occurred on 1st May 1707.

When James VI (King of Scots 1567-1625) became James I (King of England 1603-1625) a Church of Scotland Kirk opened to accommodate the King and other retainers.

The Parish also uses the title Kirk of the Crown of Scotland. The Crown depicted on the doors is the Scottish Crown. The Crown, Sword and Sceptre are together known as the Honours of Scotland ~ the oldest Crown Jewels in the British Isles.

Oliver Cromwell ordered most of the English Crown Jewels to be broken up or melted down. When his troops arrived in Scotland to do likewise with the Honours ~ they could not be found. The Honours were hidden at Dunnottar Castle. They were eventually hidden by the Minister's Wife underneath Kinneff Parish Kirk in Aberdeenshire. They were uncovered in 1660.

This building was built in 1932 as a Morris Motors Showroom. I have marked out where the large display windows used to be on the ground floor before they were filled in when the building was converted into the Combined Court Centre in the mid-1980's. Prior to the 1980's the courts in Oxford used to sit in a variety of buildings and for large trials they only had use of two Court Rooms in the old County Hall on New Road.

The Combined Court is home to the Oxford County Court, The Oxford District Registries of the Queen's Bench Division and Family Division of the High Court of Justice, Oxford Crown Court and finally the District Probate Registry at Oxford.

The snow storm halted the sewer repair works undertaken in January and February 2009.

Guernsey is not part of the United Kingdom. It is an independent Dependency of the British Crown. In summer 1939 the UK removed its military presence on Guernsey.
