The Disney Concert Hall was constructed between 1999 and 2003. It has all the hallmarks of Frank Gehry with its conventional appearance and stainless steel exterior.

This shows the highly reflective quality of the original stainless steel cladding. This was not sanded and as you can see, acts like a near-perfect mirror.

The soaring lobby includes massive columns made of Douglas fir wood. They are meant to imitate the scale and grandeur of the tree that they came from.

Downtown L.A. has eleven buildings that are over 200 metres tall. Quite a contrast from Saskatoon, where the tallest building is a mere 79 metres.

Underneath the hall is an underground parking lot that was built between 1992 and 1996. The hall plus the parking lot cost a total of $274 million to build.

The concert hall project was plagued by funding problems and took a total of 11 years to finish. The original stone exterior was changed to metal as a cost-saving measure.

It's quite a contrast seeing the straight lines of the skyscrapers against the sweeping curves of the Disney Concert Hall.

This is a memorial fountain to Lillian Disney, Walt Disney's widow who donated $50 million toward the hall. It's covered with broken pieces of Delft porcelain, which she loved.

The building on the left is Los Angeles City Hall, built from 1926-1928. Following a seismic retrofit from 1998 to 2001, it is the world's largest base-isolated structure. It was also the city's tallest building until 1964.

The highly reflective panels of the building's exterior caused some unintended side effects. Drivers were blinded by the reflected sunlight, and neighbouring condo residents complained that the exterior acting like a parabolic mirror, heating their units to unbearably hot temperatures. Certain parts of the building's exterior were then lightly sanded to make a more matte finish, thus diminishing those problems.

Dorothy Chandler Pavillion

The Dorothy Chandler Pavillion was built in 1962-64 and was home to the Los Angeles Philharmonic until 2003, when the Walt Disney Concert Hall was completed. The Academy Awards ceremony was also held here from 1969-1987 and intermittently during the 1990s.

Bougainvillea vines grow all over the place in California, including our hotel. It's a shame I can barely keep one alive as a houseplant back home.
