Excellent street art by Conor Harrington. This was Baroque the Streets, part of the Dulwich Art Festival; new murals based on works held in the permanent collection of Dulwich Picture Gallery. I have no idea which painting this is based on.

This was my favourite. I watched a video on a number of the artists involved. It only showed snatches of the artists' technique but it is clear that Conor Harrington is a master of the squeegee. A new name to me but I want to see more..

I found this place when looking for the Peace mural opposite Dalston Junction station. A very pleasant place to walk around, if somewhat contrived, with nice little corners to poke around in.

Street Art.

Back to the Future. I've Googled this and found that it is the work of Graffiti Life, a team of artists with a professional looking web site. A bit too professional maybe as, apart from the gallery, they could be a firm of management consultants. Not what I expected.

I've seen another photo of this which shows the mural in a "finished" state except that the door is entirely green with the mural painted around it. Can't help wondering about that!

The Working Canal.

The first of a series of four mosaics charting the history of the Regent's Canal in London and which can be found at City Road Basin. This panel illustrates the heyday of the working canal during the early 19th century.

Extract from callyarts.org/index.php?/news/new-project--hanover/

Commencing Jan 2009
Hanover Wall Project
Cally Arts launched a new project on the City Road Basin of Regents Canal. New mosaics have now been installed to be completed in Spring 2010.

A WORLD IN ISLINGTON

People have settled in Islington from many parts of Britain and from many other countries. They have brought their cultures and their skills with them to add to those that already existed in this area. Goods from elsewhere in Britain and other countries travelled on the canal to factories and warehouses, especially in the 19th century. These four panels, made by children in Hanover School working with two local artists in partnership with Cally Arts, celebrate the continuing journey of people and goods into Islington and the way we use the canal in the 21st century.

You can see all four of the panels here: www.flickr.com/photos/48971431@N06/sets/72157632505318749...

The first of a series of four mosaics charting the history of the Regent's Canal in London and which can be found at City Road Basin. This panel illustrates the heyday of the working canal during the early 19th century.

Rodin’s Monument to the Burghers of Calais, outside the Houses of Parliament.

The following extract is from www.henry-moore.org/hmf/news/burghers-of-calais

This sculpture commemorates an episode in 1347 during the Hundred Years War, when six men volunteered to act as hostages while Calais was under siege, carrying the city's heavy keys to King Edward III of England. When Rodin was commissioned to produce the monument more than four centuries later, he took a quite different approach than might have been expected - by grouping all six men together on the same base and showing them as dishevelled and tormented, barefoot and with rope around their necks, he emphasises the tragic plight of human suffering, rather than an idealised heroism.

The fourth of a series of four mosaics charting the history of the Regent's Canal in London and which can be found at City Road Basin. This panel shows the canal as it is now, as a leisure resource and natural habitat; a popular route for cyclists, walkers and joggers.

The Layered City.

The third of a series of four mosaics charting the history of the Regent's Canal in London and which can be found at City Road Basin. This panel explores industrialisation during the mid 19th and 20th centuries with the focus on different modes of transport.

This is my favourite of the four panels, though I don't see any direct connection with the canal.
