Two Anise Magnolias (Magnolia salicifolia) are located on the East side of Anne Arundel Residence Hall. Some people feel that fragrant white flowers of Anise Magnolias have a lemon scent. Sam Bahr, photographer

'Spring Snow' Magnolia

This 'Spring Snow' Magnolia (Magnolia x loebneri 'Spring Snow') was planted in August of 2009. This is the first time that it has had any blooms on it. The fragrance surprised me as to me it had a clean, mildly perfumed soapy smell. While it had an attractive fragrance, it did not have what I would describe as a typical magnolia fragrance.

This tree is located on Tawes Plaza and gets afternoon shade from Tawes Hall. The number of large white tepals does not match up with the description for 'Spring Snow' in the Manual of Woody Landscape Plants by Dr. Michael Dirr, so I am not certain that this is the same clone that Dr. Dirr observed. 'Spring Snow' is a selection from the group of Loebner Magnolias. 'Spring Snow' bloomed about a week later than the Star Magnolias on Tawes Plaza and managed to escape a late spring frost that damaged the Star Magnolia blossoms. Sam Bahr, author and photographer

These students are taking advantage of the beautiful fall weather to try some tightrope walking. While they did not appear to be damaging these thick barked trees, there is always the potential to damage trees when you tie something around them and we discourage people from doing this. This campus landmark, a white oak (Quercus alba) affectionately known by many as the Chapel Oak because of its proximity to the Chapel on the UMD campus was removed on August 1, 2012 due to its earlier death due to natural causes. After counting growth rings, UMD Arboretum and Botanical Garden staff determined that it was probably around 76 years of age. Carin Celebuski, photographer
