The Tehachapi Wind Farm, with around 5,000 wind turbines, is the second largest collection of wind generators in the world (the largest is at the Altamont pass, near Livermore and the San Francisco Bay area), but is now the largest wind power array in the world in output. The turbines are operated by a dozen private companies, and collectively produce about 800 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, enough to meet the residential needs of 350,000 people every year. With over 15,000 turbines in the state (7,000 at Altamont and 3,000 at San Gorgonio Pass, near Palm Springs), wind power in California makes up about 1% of California's electricity.

Carrizo Plain.....this wagon was off to the side of the road going to a small campground. We were just leaving the campground when the crow was spotted. Temblor range in distance..San Andreas Fault runs along it. The sign is from times past. This campground area was formerly owned by the Kern County Land Company...it now belongs to the Bureau of Land Managment. This is probably an old water wagon. I'm guessing the barrier around it is to keep vehicles from driving up to it...not sure...could also possibly be to keep cattle from going up and rubbing.

Looking out towards the San Andreas Fault. Carrizo Plain area is one of the best areas to see this.
Carrizo Plain is the largest single native grassland remaining in California. It is 250,000 acres..50 miles long and up to 15 miles across. Tule Elk, Pronghorn Antelope, Kit Foxes, and an assortement of other critters make this place their home. Only things I saw were an owl and crow...and a bunch of cattle. When the wildflowers are having a good year (this year not) it's an amazing sight.

The area got the name from an infamous California bandit named Tiburcio Vásquez who hid out in them back in 1873-1874. These rock formations were created by the San Andreas Fault. They've been quite popular with the tv and filming industry as they are not too far from the Hollywood/LA area.

The mine was first used for acquiring fireclay until gold was discovered in 1894. This is part of the camp..not the mine.
