A maize farmer proudly surveys her crop. Efforts to support small farmers in the developing world are making a real difference. As we experience increasingly high food prices, it’s the poor in the developing world who feel it the most. Our agricultural work at the foundation focuses on improving small farmers’ productivity so they have more to eat, more to sell, and real, tangible improvements in their lives.
A local public health advisory promotes the use of condoms to prevent HIV infection. (Andhra Pradesh, India, 2009).

"The war against AIDS is being waged on two fronts—treating those who are already infected and preventing new infections. Treatment continues to be scaled up, with more than 5 million people receiving HIV drugs. This is a great success story. Rich country generosity has been crucial and the execution in poor countries has been strong. However, there will not be enough money to treat everyone who will become infected if we don’t halt the progress of HIV." --Bill Gates
Every two minutes, a woman dies in childbirth.Deaths during childbirth are particularly challenging to address because problems that arise in childbirth create emergency situations with a narrow window of a few minutes to a few hours to intervene. Solving this problem requires effective preventive measures or treatments provided rapidly to women and newborns, often at home or in rural clinics.
Susan Kitayimbwa, a cassava farmer, cleans some of her crops in preparation for a meal. Easy to grow and packed with nutrients, cassava and sweet potatoes are a vital resource for improving nutrition and livelihoods in developing countries.
A woman returns from collecting leaves near the village of Dikha. In developing countries, women do up to 80 percent of the work on farms, like the planting, harvesting, and processing. They are responsible for both producing the food and preparing it for their families. Yet women farmers receive only 5 percent of extension services and are underrepresented in training programs. There are also few women in agricultural research and policy-making positions. We’re providing research fellowships to 360 African women scientists to ensure that the next generation of agricultural researchers includes women. (Doti District, Nepal, 2009)
Creating nutrient-rich crops

A group of small farmers work in an orange-fleshed sweet potato field in Tanzania. Long a staple of the local diet and a primary reserve crop during famines, traditional white sweet potatoes unfortunately lack much in the way of nutrients. But improved orange-fleshed varieties are packed with vitamins, especially vitamin A. The new varieties also mature more quickly and produce far more potatoes than the old white varieties. Access to new farming techniques combined with the wider availability of the nutrient-rich sweet potatoes, have driven down Tanzania's malnutrition rate of children under age 5.
