I spotted the Exit sign neon and thought I should take a photo, so I asked the two chaps if it would be OK. "Five dollars", they joked, before letting me go ahead, and pointing out the ENTER sign (and the fact that te neon arch still worked on that side), so I snapped that as well. A little post-processing in Diptic on the MUNI home, and there you go.

As part of the Story of Berlin exhibition (which is OK; a bit too showy for my liking, perhaps) you can visit a car park in the rather dingy 1970s shopping precinct that houses it. It's been laid out as it could have been used- as a nuclear bunker in the event of war.

The whole thing had a tragi-comic air to it. There was room for 3,600 people, but the food would have had to have been brought in by those in charge during the two days it would take to convert the car park, and the kitchen was tiny; you're looking at its full depth, and the width wasn't much bigger either. Two hobs are out of shot to the right.

Speaking of "those in charge", there wasn't actually anyone in authority anyway. In the rest of the Bundesrepublik, the defence forces were in charge, but they weren't allowed to operate in West Berlin, and the occupying forces wanted nothing to do with the shelters (possibly because they saw them as a bit of a joke).

(I've slacked on my photo uploads so I've skipped a day and a bit; I'll go back and fill in the gap eventually.)

It's not a great photo, really, but this shows the racks of bunks that 3,600 refugees would have used to shelter in a converted West Berlin underground car park, in the event of a nuclear war.

To save power, there would have been no lights (this was dimly, but distinctly, lit; I probably should have used the SLR to take this, because the iPhone obviously struggled). The structure wasn't designed as a bunker, and in fact there was (weak) mobile phone reception inside. The whole thing had a distinctly tragi-comic air.

I'd say it's worth visiting. Certainly it is if you're in the area anyway. I need to go back with a better camera, in any case.
