The Louvre, Paris.

I had this image in mind from first arriving in Paris - its the main reason I bothered to take the wide angle all the way on the Eurostar! But the long exposure was always going to depend on what the weather was doing. I always intended this to be a black and white image, but as soon as I arrived in the courtyard there was another photographer set up with a tripod in the exact spot I was hoping to use (and wanting a straight-on composition of the pyramids there wasn't much scope for setting up at a different angle) and this brought home to me the realisation of just how many photographs are taken of this building every day!

So i'm hoping for something a little different. The colour in the sky is part real, part artificial. The photo was taken late on a winter's afternoon when there was a deep blue tint to the clouds, and my B+W 10-stop ND filter tends to add a warm magenta cast to images. Usually I would correct this in ACR, and most of my long exposures tend to get converted to monochrome at some point anyway. But today I decided to have a play around with the colour version and I quite like this approach where the purple tones are exaggerated somewhat. I think it adds a kind of eerie, almost alien/sci-fi atmosphere to the picture - like something from Stargate!

I've had my eye on this shot for a little while. Previous attempts, on sunny, dry days seem to be a little dull, the cobbles are a very slate grey colour and just didn't look all that interesting even in monochrome.

This shot was taken in the rain, and its just what I was hoping for. The cobbles and the black metal hand rail posts were much more interesting with a wet sheen and the occasional puddle, and the hooded figure came along at just the right time. If i'm honest, I think I was hoping for another umberella shot, but the mysterious hooded character works just as well.
