Several seconds after taking this photo I was standing thigh deep in cold, foamy Cornish surf, with my fingers crossed that the drag of the wave would not pull my tripod over...!

It's difficult to get a sense of scale in this picture. In hindsight I wish I had been able to place something in the shot to show how big the wave was! The rocks in the foreground are pretty large boulders, as anyone who has had the good fortune to visit Porth Nanven beach will know. This is a special place - sometimes referred to by locals as the dinosaur egg beach. These huge ovoid boulders were shaped by the sea tens of thousands of years ago, and are now protected by law, so if you ever do visit here don't be tempted to take home any souvenirs!

Clevedon Pier, Severn estuary, near Bristol

#102 in 112 pictures in 2012: Vanishing point

Sunday turned out to be a great sunny day for a trip to the "seaside". I managed to get a couple of long exposures of the pier before the tripod police asked me to leave. What a shame that such a wonderful piece of architecture is discouraged from being photographed and yet the fisherman are perfectly allowed to slosh their bait and fish guts all over this amazing wooden promentory...!

I would've liked to get in a bit closer to the pagoda at the far end. But, I am pleased with this shot and although it does include a lot more of the woodwork than I originally wanted the texture of the wood has come out really well in the black & white conversion.

....and all was not lost as I managed to sneak underneath the pier to get a couple more long exposures...

Underneath Clevedon Pier, Severn estuary, near Bristol

#72 in 112 pictures in 2010: Overhead

After being asked to remove myself and my camera from the skyward side of the pier I found myself underneath, setting up for a long exposure of the water and beautiful metal legs of this magnificent Victorian building. I had in mind an image of just the metal struts poking out of a milky sea, but the rocky foreground seemed to add to the symmetry of the image so I made another exposure at a slightly shorter focal length.

I thought twice about taking photos of this pipe. After all, its just a pipe. Not the most photogenic structure to be spending time out in the rain, scrabbling about with filters in the cold and the wind. But in the end i'm glad I did. I like the way the pipe acts like a bold, black, solid structure against the more dynamic and fluid skies.

This time I went for a shorter 'long exposure' to try and capture a bit more action in the waves on the shore.

This is an old photo, taken back in 2011. I have a colour landscape shot back in my flickr collection somewhere - I never really liked the portrait version. But i've wanted to try a bit of B&W processing on this ever since I got hold of Silver Efex... here is the result. I may post the colour version as well, the 'warp speed' effect of the long exposure is kinda cool in colour, though its a bit overly vivid for my liking.
