Happy Waterfall Wednesday

I've finally made it up to the mountains to shoot some waterfalls. A big thanks to +John Harrison, +Edward Nunez & +Timothy Joyce for calling me up and inviting me to tag along.

Saturday evening we hit up Burney Falls and we got some nice light. I was hoping for a little more color in the thin clouds overhead, but I just got a subtle pink/orange hue.

Hi flickr Friends
Man, I've been so busy lately I've totally been neglecting everyone over here. While out on assignment for another shot, I grabbed this cool foggy shot of a very old trestle bridge in Tehama County. It's call Jelly's Ferry Bridge and it crosses the Sacramento River north of Red Bluff. The fog added some interesting mystery to the bridge. I need to shoot me some more architecture, there just isn't that much of it in my neck of the woods.

What has everyone been up to?

Happy #WaterfallWednesday everyone. I haven't gone out to shoot any waterfalls lately, so here's a new shot from my last trip to Mossbrae Falls some time ago now. I was hoping for more snow and to my chagrin it started snowing on my way out. It was still a nice morning in the solitude of this beautiful!

Sweet Success

I have been sharing my saga lately where I'm trying to get this certain landscape photo of Mount Lassen from Tehama county for a client of mine. I have been hiking and getting up pre-dawn countless mornings and I've finally managed a great sunrise. While this is a great shot, it wasn't my #1 comp. When I was heading out, I saw some very thin and almost non-existent clouds, so rather than hike out two miles in the dark for a meh sunrise, I shot on the the side of the road here where there is a pretty good view.

As one thing led to another, the sky blew up and finally got a great shot. I was kicking myself for not doing the hike a seventh time. There are other great shots I bagged along the way, but none that were explicitly what my client wants. I still want my A-shot with this kind of sunrise, so I'm going to keep my eyes on the weather report and stand ready to head out again.

I've hiked 24 miles, driven to and scouted ten different locations for this one shot. Who said landscape photography was easy?

This is a single exposure double processed. One frame for the forgound and one for the sky. I blended them together using luminosity masks. f/8 1/3 sec 48mm ISO 100. Nikon D90 18-105 f/3.5-5.6

It looked super promising this morning. Then this stupid later of low clouds rolled in. So I practically ran two miles in the dark with all of my gear to get this sunrise only to get skunked again. I'm pretty grumpy right now....

Double Take (State Theater Red Bluff)

Eric Leslie posted a photo:

*What comfort-zone*
This shot is the result of stepping way out of my normal comfort zone. I set out to shoot Mount Lassen from the point of view of Red Bluff, at night, all lit by the moon. Having almost no idea if this would work, I set out at 11pm (way later than I have ever set out before) and went to this place where I thought I could get the shot. It failed miserably. Too many clouds and the moon wasn't bright enough meant I could not see Lassen.

Not one to waste an opportunity, I walked around the area and tried shooting some architecture which I also know nothing about about. I was alone shooting in the middle of the night standing in the middle of streets, all stuff I never do. I kept looking over my shoulder seeing everything that moved thinking it was going to eat me.

Then to wrap this whole adventure up, I processed this as a HDR in Photomatix which is another thing I rarely do. It seems people like +Trey Ratcliff take images like this all the time so I figured I better step out there and give it a shot. I actually like the way HDR looks on architecture and at night. I probably won't be going out galavanting in the middle of the night all the time, but it was really fun creativity fuel.

Believe it or not, this was a shot of Horsetail Falls in the Columbia River Gorge. I was passing through on a day when it was raining and the falls were swollen and misty. There wasn't a dry place anywhere. I tried really really hard to get a clean shot of the falls, but the best thing I came home with was this accident. I had accidentally pressed the shutter right when I was getting up to move. It's a 1sec exposure of the falls and the autumn colors on the left and whatever else that was caught as the camera was swept away.

I thought the shapes and textures were really interesting.

My home internet is on the fritz so I'm tying to sneak this in here from work (shhh don't tell anyone) and hopefully get to go through all the #WaterfallWednesday submissions as soon as it returns. This is the legendary Mossbrae Falls shoot from an unusual angle. Good day everyone!

*Short on Words*
I processed a few new images this evening and when I stopped to just look at this shot. I was just awestruck. Not so much on the photograph that I created, but more the expanse that is the universe and inversely how little us Humans really know. A clear night full of stars is very humbling.
This was shot with +Scott Jarvie one evening when he was driving through the area. We got together and shot up Lake Siskiyou and Mount Shasta for the evening.

Woop Woop!
It's #waterfallwednesday again! Luckily I'm stocked up with a slew of new images to keep me going. At my last trip to Mossbrae, I had to take the shot everyone takes home of these drippy details at the bast of the falls. It's a challenge trying to make it feel straight. There isn't a single straight line anywhere, but I had to find a rotation that just felt right. I'm not sure if I found it, but I had to set it somewhere. Somehow I don't think it really matters.

I was out shooting with my bud Ken Hubble. I'm looking forward to catching up with everyone's waterfall shots.

*Fun Adventures*
I've taken to bringing waders with me when I go out shooting near water because inevitably I end up standing in it. So here I'm standing in the middle of the Sacramento River and I feel one foot getting wet because there is a small leak in one wader. No big deal.

I finish shooting this scene and I take a path back to shore that was too deep and the water level exceeds to the top of my hip wader and boom, it's full of water. Good times. My foot is wet, but somehow I managed to stay warm.

Happy new year everyone! I'm really excited about all the new photo opportunities that come about.

*Good Times*
It's always awesome when you can admire someone's work online, have them circle you back, do a video hangout and then eventually get to go out shooting with them. I happened to be up around Mount Shasta when +Scott Jarvie was heading south, so sha-bang!

We labored quite a bit about where to go because it was completely overcast on the north side and the south side was partly cloudy. So we ended up at Lake Siskiyou hoping for some good luck. The peak was blocked by clouds during the alpenglow period, but they eventually passed in time for the stars to arrive. That glow on the bottom was fog rolling in all lit up by the city.

Scott was much more than I expected. He's a great opera singer, has stuntman driving skills, is a ninja photographer and his flashlight is bigger than mine. Thanks Scott for looking me up yesterday.

Looking For You

I'd actually like some honest critiques on this shot. I really love the colors and the general high key kind of feel it has. I couldn't decide if I liked the exsposure pushed up to hide most of the detail in the snow or how I have it posted showing more subtle details. You have to look at it full size to get the gist of it. Looking at the smaller image makes the snow look darker than I intended.

What would you do with this?
