In response to questions, I was able to visit Cuba in November-December 2012 for 10 days through the US-Cuba "People to People" Program, which is coordinated through several US universities. The trip enabled us to travel throughout Cuba -- from city to rural areas. To legally visit Cuba from America, this is pretty much the only way to go. The trip was definitely guided -- by outstanding British and Cuban guides who were forthright and knowledgable -- but It meant being with 28 other (fortunately, equally interested) people about 16 hours a day. The program allowed for no real personal time, lots of "cultural" visits, little "getting to know" individual Cubans for much time -- but it was a marvelously fascinating experience. The good news -- we learned a lot, the Cuban people are welcoming and wonderful, the (crumbling) architecture is beautiful, and it is inexpensive to travel there. The not so good -- the vast majority of Cubans are very poor, lacking proper nutrition, and living in an infrastructure that is inadequate (erratic daily water and electrical, major food shortages, over-the-roof prices, a dead economy etc.) This is not a political opinion -- it's just the way it is. Anyway, check in with your alma mater to see if they have such a visitors' program!

Instead of an Embassy, the U.S. has a"special interest section' in Cuba, represented by a squat, square building in Havana. In the past, the staff there was running news headlines across the top of the building. The Cubans' response was to build this dense fleet of flagpoles directly in front of the building, in order to obscure it from view. The building was actually behind me as I shot this on the fly, from inside a bus.
