Historic Ohio Central Operation

Ohio Central was given the job haul a 240,000 pound shipment of equipment for Rolls-Royce out of Mt. Vernon, Ohio. The three flat car loads will be shipped to St. Louis, Missouri to be interchanged with Union Pacific. From there, UP will take them to the Port of Houston. After being loaded onto a ship, the crates will be shipped to an oil field off the coast of Brazil. This is the first railroad shipment to be taken out of Mt. Vernon in over 40-years. Rolls-Royce is saving $260,000 by shipping the freight by car rather than trucks.

Ohio Central attached the loads to the Mt. Vernon Turn. This photo shows the train crossing the Licking River in St. Louisville, Ohio. The wide loads required personnel to monitor the clearance on each side of the girder bridge.

Norfolk Southern's Erie heritage unit waits on the point of coal train number 698 at Milepost 1 on the West Virginia Secondary. The train would hold here for several hours before finally getting permission through the interlocking plant at Bannon.

The PRR-styled color position lights are still lit after a CSX trackage rights stone train passed through town. The line is Norfolk Southern's Ft. Wayne Line. This route was once a sprawling piece of Conrail track, running between Ft. Wayne and Pittsburgh. Today this section is used by many railroads, but does not see much traffic. It sees several daily manifest trains from NS, a few coal, local freights, some Chicago Ft. Wayne and Eastern trains west of Bucyrus, about one Wheeling and Lake Erie local a week, and a minimal amount of CSX trains.

La Rue was my first stop on this trip that ended up taking two days and covered several hundred miles. I had originally only planned to go here, get some shots, and go right back home, but my desire for adventure wouldn't let me do that.
