On Sunday I took my bestest mate for a woodland wonderland walk at Loxley Woods on the Polden Ridge. The Anenomes and Primroses were on their way out but the Bluebells and Orchids were shining through..we had a wonderful day wandering around the trail with warblers singing above us and flowers everywhere. The Bluebells smelt amazing and we got drunk in the atmosphere...we had to have a little lie own!
(No plants were injured in this photoshoot!)

This cuckoo plant shone out...the light coming from behind, lit the plant up exposing a little spider...sweeet!

Early Purple Orchid
This is one of the most common orchids and can be found in most parts of the country in woods and grassland. The Early Purple Orchid (Orchis mascula) is the earliest orchid to flower, generally being April in the south and slightly later towards the north. Flowering can continue until the end of June. It generally has a prominent dark-blotched rosette of leaves at its base, a long purple stem ending in a spike of rich purple flowers (although they may be paler or even white).

Early-purple Orchid is a native, tuberous perennial herb, growing up to 60cm.
Flowers are usually purple to dark pink, but lighter and white forms also occur.
Leaves have dark spots.
The flower spikes are less dense than in Common-spotted Orchid or Western-marsh Orchid.

Bugle is most often found in semi-shaded, moist conditions but can also feature in sunny damp meadows.
The flower is an important early source of nectar for butterflies, especially the Duke of Burgundy, Marsh Fritillary and the Pearl-Bordered Fritillary.

Also called Cramp Balls, these are irregular ball-shaped fungi which attach themselves to wood without a stem. They begin reddish-brown and then turn black with a smooth texture, eventually becoming like charcoal, hence the common English name which stems from the Saxons King's burnt cakes. When sliced open the fruit body can be seen to be made up of dark and white concentric rings.

They can be found solitary or in groups on the dead wood of deciduous trees, especially ash and birch. Found all year round. Common and widespread.
