Our regular roving railway reporter Flying Snail asked for some help, and I was happy to oblige. He's nearing the end of his college work (a photographic project on the former railways in Co. Meath) and asked to see photos of Christy Mahon, the former signalman at Kilmessan Station.

Curves in Cork

Chose this curvy photo of the railway station in Cork for the bewildering multiplicity of signage. Most scenes in our early photos are blissfully uncluttered, but not this one!

Also chose it because it has a clock clearly displaying the time (like a moth to a flame), and the advertising posters are fab (technical term). However, think the adverts contain a first on our Flickr stream, unless of course you know different - Earth Closets!

Also wonder what happened ladies who got confused or were short-sighted and wandered into the Ladies First Class Room rather than Ladies Third Class Room?

Fast Excursion to the International Exhibition

It looks as if some quite stylish ladies have just alighted from a train at Limerick Railway Station, though they're of no interest to local children who are completely focused on the photographer.

Delighted to see a poster in this one that gives us great dating evidence as it advertises the International Exhibition, with a Fast Excursion to Dublin on Tuesday 23rd, though unfortunately can't make out the month. The International Exhibition ran in Dublin from May to November 1907.

So many of our train shots show gleaming metal and shining livery, that we thought you might like this stripped back view inside the belly of the beast, with a shot of a train engine in the repair shop at (we thought) Arigna, Co. Roscommon.

However, while it may have been in the "repair shop" as the photographer James P. O'Dea called it, most commenters are in agreement that this engine was being dismantled or cannibalised for parts, scrap, etc. There are also suggestions that this photo was not taken at Arigna at all, but at nearby Ballinamore. As Flying Snail says:
"I don't think there was a loco repair shop at Arigna. The only workshops on the C&L [Cavan & Leitrim Line] were at Ballinamore, which was frequented heavily by photographers like O'Dea. This is where I suspect the photos is taken if it is a C&L machine we are looking at. The workshop buildings are now incorporated into a school, which the old station at Ballinamore was converted to after closure."

An engine (CIE 171) going onto a turn table at Dundalk, Co. Louth.

Flying Snail told us:
"In the background is the GNR's 'general stores' building, which is a little run down these days. A lot of CIE's steam locos were scrapped in the Dundalk works and this may explain the number of engine wheels dumped in the background."

Fred McDonagh in his Signal Cabin, Enfield, Co. Meath at 1.55 p.m.

We got some lovely information on Fred from his grandson Traingraham:
"A wonderfull photo of my Grandad, he was just after moving from Moyvalley station some 3 miles down the track which was just after closing down. " A true Gentleman" Lived in Moyvalley station till he died in Naas hospital on the 7 July 1977, Retired in November 71 or 72, had a daughter and two sons. His wife died on 2 Jan 1983."

And we have another lovely O'Dea Collection photo featuring Fred (and James O'Dea himself) at Furey's pub in Moyvalley...

This is Mrs Lawlor, pictured at Borris Train Station in Co. Carlow. She has a friendly, but compelling gaze.

This photo was taken just days before this train station closed forever on 1 April 1963.

Thanks to Flying Snail for the information that "This photo was featured on a BBC railway walk series about 15 years ago in which Mrs Lawlor was interviewed" and apparently Mrs Lawlor was described as being the last "halt keeper."

This is engine 207 (aka Boyne) at Conniberry, Co. Laois. According to our catalogue, this picture was taken while 207 was "getting coal supplies". However, the consensus from comments below is that it is water that's being taken on, so I'll change the description in our catalogue...

Thanks to a link provided by blackpoolbeach, we now know this engine was blue!
