Our regular roving railway reporter Flying Snail asked for some help, and I was happy to oblige. He's nearing the end of his college work (a photographic project on the former railways in Co. Meath) and asked to see photos of Christy Mahon, the former signalman at Kilmessan Station.

Fred McDonagh in his Signal Cabin, Enfield, Co. Meath at 1.55 p.m.

We got some lovely information on Fred from his grandson Traingraham:
"A wonderfull photo of my Grandad, he was just after moving from Moyvalley station some 3 miles down the track which was just after closing down. " A true Gentleman" Lived in Moyvalley station till he died in Naas hospital on the 7 July 1977, Retired in November 71 or 72, had a daughter and two sons. His wife died on 2 Jan 1983."

And we have another lovely O'Dea Collection photo featuring Fred (and James O'Dea himself) at Furey's pub in Moyvalley...

An Irish Railway Records Society special train excursion captured at Baltinglass, Co. Wicklow. Interesting to see some women in this photo, but maybe they were just locals who came out to see what all the fuss was about... We thought this station was closed for good soon after this photo was taken, and it's great to get confirmation of that from billh35 that "the station would close 6 days later on 21st March 1959".

These gentlemen are D. O'Sullivan and T. Miller, and the photo was taken at Kingsbridge (now Heuston) Train Station in Dublin. The photo was taken at around 1.48 p.m. or 13:48 to use train time.

Flying Snail said:
"That signal cabin was installed by the Great Southern Railway in 1935/6 as part of a major re-signalling scheme for the Dublin area, which included converting the old fashioned semaphore signals to then modern colour light signals. You will notice the levers in Heuston cabin are rather stumpy (and easier to use!), as they operated the points and signals electronically, rather than fully manually. Heuston cabin was eventually closed and demolished in 2002."

We thought this was the view from a railway signal box at a Church Road in Roscommon, and as there are quite a few Church Roads in County Roscommon, we asked for help. Apparently, ask and you shall receive because it turns out this was Church Road Junction, but not in Roscommon at all!

Flying Snail pinpointed the location exactly:
"That's Church Road Jct in Dublin, down in the North Wall yards area. The view is looking west, with the bridge of the Dublin-Belfast line on the horizon. As the signal on one of the gantries is in the 'off' position, the loco is coming towards O'Dea presumably to shunt or take out of a goods train. The Brennan's shop is now an ordinary residence."

And Eagle Eye eyelightfilms spotted the sign on the horizon for Smith & Pearson, Structural steel, engineers and iron works, Newcomen Works, Ossory Road, Dublin 3.

Clean up following the derailment of the 7.30 Sligo goods train at the 46 mile signal cabin, Co. Westmeath.

Searched some newspapers online for a story about this derailment, but to no avail, so grateful thanks to Flying Snail for the following:
"Crash at 46 Mile Box
On 12th February a number of wagons on the 19:30 goods (Sligo - ex North Wall) were derailed. They piled up just on the Mullingar side of the signal cabin completely blocking the line.
It appears that a wagon in the middle of the train was derailed some distance on the Dublin side of the cabin and that the following wagons came off the road at the level crossing.
Trains were diverted via Portarlington and buses were called in until the following evening, when the siding was slewed into the running line to allow trains to pass the accident scene.
Loco A44r went down with the Inchicore crane, leaving North Wall around 3:00 on the 13th. A51r attended with 2M, the Athlone crane. Three oil tankers - nos. 1720, 1726 and 1732 had run down the embankment on the down side and two were upside down in a stream.
The line was eventually cleared by the evening of the 14th, when A44r etc.. returned to Dublin around 21:00.

This is the Signal Cabin at Athlone West, Co. Westmeath.

No name for the gentleman unfortunately, but as he has his CIÉ (Coras Iompair Éireann) jacket on, he's definitely a railway employee.

This photo was taken at 3 minutes to 3 on a sunny afternoon, and also shows the new electric diagram for line switching, approaching trains, etc. (clunky looking box above the signal levers).

Oh, and this chap was obviously too busy posing for James O'Dea - he'd forgotten to change the calendar from November to December...
