Dublin Bread Company revisited

National Library of Ireland on The Commons posted a photo:

We recently saw the Dublin Bread Company building at 6-7 Lower Sackville Street (now O'Connell Street) in a state of chassis after the Easter Rising of 1916.

I think that this photograph captures the very final stages of its construction, just before opening?!

Date: Circa July 1900?

P.S. On Monday, 20 March 1865 (148 years ago), our very own William Lawrence was announcing the opening of his new Photographic Studio on the first floor of 7 Upper Sackville Street - just down the street near Nelson's Pillar!

Returning to Dublin's 1932 urinals today (installed in advance of the 1932 Eucharistic Congress). Hope I'm not developing an unhealthy obsession with them. This one was on Eden Quay, Dublin, and you can just catch a glimpse of Liberty Hall behind the tree.

There are two great posters on the walls of the pissoir. One is for a Hypnosis service, advertising a free booklet from Sean M. Bourke of Casimir Avenue in Harold's Cross, Dublin. The other poster is for Listowel Races on 23rd, 24th, & 25th September 1969 with Stakes of £11,000.

Thanks to beachcomberaustralia for his Limerick inspired by this photo:
"When loitering alongside the Liffey,
You might be aware of a whiffy.
Near a Volkswagen car
There's a leaky pissoir.
Sure the footprints will dry in a jiffy."

3 weeks ago, I uploaded a Gun Powder Office photo. Please indulge me for returning to the scene of the crime so soon, but I just fell in love with this image of the same bustling junction in Dublin (O'Connell Bridge, formerly Carlisle Bridge) from another angle.

Prize today (virtual and wholly imaginary) for the first person who works out why I called this one "Bonafide Travellers" goes to John Spooner.

The most prominent tram (bottom left) was the Ballsbridge tram, while the Blackrock and Rathmines trams are on the Bridge...
Dating argument is hot and heavy below, so please read the comments if you think you can help.

This is the procession for James MacNeill, newly sworn in Governor General of the Irish Free State. Our catalogue had this as Westmoreland Street, Dublin, but following discussion here, we're now sure that this is actually the head of the procession on O'Connell Street, having just passed over O'Connell Bridge, with Westmoreland Street in the distance back over the bridge .

This coverage from Thursday 2 February's Irish Independent outlines the ceremonial sequence:
"Mr. James MacNeill was, yesterday, installed as Governor-General of the Saorstat in succession to Mr. T. M. Healy. The ceremony, which was dignified and impressive, took place at Leinster House in the presence of a distinguished gathering. The new Governor-General was sworn in by the Chief Justice, and after the ceremony he laid a wreath on the Griffith-Collins cenotaph in Leinster Lawn. His Excellency, accompanied by a cavalry escort, was then driven through the city to his official residence in the Phoenix Park."

In typical fashion (if you'll pardon the pun), the Irish Independent writer dismisses Mr. MacNeill's attire with two words: "morning dress", but we are treated to great detail on Mrs. MacNeill, who "wore a clipped lamb coat trimmed with fox fur and a brown felt hat to match the fur. Her dress was also brown, trimmed at the neck with soft yellow, and she wore shooes and stockings to match the dress."

The MacNeills had been staying at the Shelbourne Hotel and they left at 10.45 to drive to Leinster House. It must have been a very swift ceremony, as the Chief Justice administered the Oath at 11; they were crossing O'Connell Bridge at 11.28 (according to the clock in this photo) and the Irish Independent said they reached the Vice-Regal Lodge at 12.10.

Revisiting (metaphorically) the urinal on Upper Ormond Quay, Dublin that we featured a while back. That 1969 Wiltshire photo was in black and white, so good to see some colour, even if it was a rather murky dark green.

We think this photo was taken in 1973, and that certainly tallies with "The Eagles" scrawled on the wall, but what about "Zero's Disco"? We asked if anyone with a misspent Dublin youth knew anything about Zero's, and to give us more dating information (and by "dating", I mean the day or month…) - no need to share tales of slow sets! Well, not unless you really want to... "was one of the French style pissoirs imported prior to the 1932 Dublin Eucharistic Congress as part of a 'clean up Dublin' campaign." Mikey also added that he thinks the last of such pissoirs in Dublin "was at Fairview at the end of Malahide Road in c1980".

This amazing scene is the closing ceremony of the Eucharistic Congress that was held in Dublin in June 1932. Earlier in the day, there had been a Solemn Pontifical High Mass at 1 p.m. in the Phoenix Park, with a special choir of 500 men and boys. A procession estimated at one million people, described as "miles of praying people", then made its way to O'Connell Bridge. The Service of Benediction and Hymns on O'Connell Bridge took place around 5.30 p.m., and the Papal Legate Cardinal Lorenzo Lauri gave his final address of the Eucharistic Congress from this location.
Funeral procession of Major E. Smyth and Captain A.P. White on the Quays in Dublin

Major E. Smyth and Captain A.P White were killed during a military raid in Drumcondra, Dublin in the early hours of Tuesday, 12 October 1920. Their funeral procession along the quays in Dublin was a huge affair, with their remains in coffins placed on gun carriages and covered with Union flags, and escorted by up to 600 troops.

Here's a snippet from the Irish Times published the next day:
"Right along the quays the procession marched to the strains of the Dead March in "Saul" and other solemn airs. On arrival at Store street the remains of Major Smyth, accompanied by one portion of the troops, were conveyed to the Great Northern Railway Station at Amiens street, where they were entrained for removal by the three o'clock train to Banbridge, where the concluding stage of the funeral takes place to-day.

As the coffin was borne from the gun carriage to the mortuary van the troops gave the customary salute, and the "Last Post" was sounded by the buglers. On the coffin was laid a beautiful wreath from two brother officers of the deceased.

The remains of Captain White, accompanied by the remaining troops, were then conveyed to the North Wall, where, after being accorded the usual military salutes, they were placed on board the steamer for England."
