Very atmospheric photo altogether taken by Elinor Wiltshire at Dublin's Marshalsea Barracks.

Because of Little Dorrit, Marshalsea conjures up the idea of a debtors' prison for me. Is that what it originally was, does anyone know, even if it was an ex-Barracks by the time this was taken in 1969?

Date: 1969
These two young entrepreneurs had set out their "stall" in front of St. Catherine's Church on Thomas Street in Dublin. Said this morning that it would make an old library very happy if these girls could be identified, and we've done it! Thanks to the sister of one of them, we now know these are Elizabeth or Lily Collins on the left, and her friend Angela Arnold on the right...

PLUS THIS JUST IN! I found four small but priceless volumes of the Irish Motor Directory and Motorists' Annual for 1907; 1912-13; 1914-15; 1915-16 in the bowels of Library Towers. These give car and bicycle (motorbike?) registration numbers for the whole of Ireland and owner names and addresses. If any of you have a bit of time on your hands, feel free to seek out our photos with cars where the reg numbers are clearly visible, let me know about them, and I'll happily check the Directory to see if we can Name That Driver (or at least owner)!

Demolition

National Library of Ireland on The Commons posted a photo:

Looks like demolition, or at least extreme gutting, of buildings on Charlotte Street, Dublin. There's a sign for Charlotte Place at the right of this photo, but I couldn't for the life of me find a trace of either still existing. Asked in anyone knew where this Dublin street was, and thanks to Irish251 for this snippet from Wikipedia's page on Dublin's Portobello area:
"Starting in the 1980s Kelly's Corner was re-developed. Old Camden Street and Charlotte Street disappeared and the ruined buildings there made way for the Camden Court Hotel. The north side of Harcourt road was developed, Stein's the opticians being the last to go in the first phase, and Gleeson's pub in the second."

Thanks also to A. P. Luckwill for this edited Google Map showing where Charlotte Street was. And decided I better do some work myself, so here's Charlotte Street on the always excellent OSI site.

MKSeery has helped out by researching the Kavanaghs on Charlotte Street in the 1911 census, and found:
"Looking at 1901 census, James Kavanagh (27) was a hair-dresser on Charlotte St. He wasn't married. He had three sisters Mary (31) Kate (29) and Ellen (17). By 1911, James married and had two daughters Ellen (3) and Martha (1).

I suppose it seems more likely that the daughters rather than the sisters became the "Kavanagh Sisters" in 1964?"
Demolition

Returning to Dublin's 1932 urinals today (installed in advance of the 1932 Eucharistic Congress). Hope I'm not developing an unhealthy obsession with them. This one was on Eden Quay, Dublin, and you can just catch a glimpse of Liberty Hall behind the tree.

There are two great posters on the walls of the pissoir. One is for a Hypnosis service, advertising a free booklet from Sean M. Bourke of Casimir Avenue in Harold's Cross, Dublin. The other poster is for Listowel Races on 23rd, 24th, & 25th September 1969 with Stakes of £11,000.
Thanks to beachcomberaustralia for his Limerick inspired by this photo:

A nun with a most remarkable (and slightly dangerous-looking) veil/head dress waiting for a bus outside the Rotunda Hospital on Parnell Street, Dublin. Cannot work out whether a clump of her own hair (unlikely) has come loose, or whether she is masking a person in front of her...

The distinctive head dress is called a cornette, and led to this order being known as the Butterfly Nuns. The Daughters of Charity abandoned the cornette on 20 September 1964, so unless this nun was ultra-traditional and carried on wearing it regardless, then this photo must have been taken before 20 September.
Bollards

National Library of Ireland on The Commons posted a photo:

Thought that we might revisit this interesting Dublin street corner, as these ornate ironwork bollards weren't so clear in this photo. They're lovely, and as swordscookie pointed out, they have holes in them "as though they were vents for something below ground". Any further information would be greatly appreciated!

For any of you thinking this is a load of bollards, this is also a great street shot. We're getting a much better view of the sculptural features of the Parnell Monument, including the oddly hyphenated provinces of Ireland: UL-STER, CON-NACHT, LEIN-STER, MUN-STER. There's the No. 8 bus on its way to Dalkey, passing by Forte's Cafe, a Dublin institution, and a cute but overloaded Fiat car complete with L plate, plus a snapshot of Dublin fashion in the Spring or summer of 1969. We don't have a more precise date for this photo, but wondering if those election(?) posters on the lamp post could help us...
Bollards

Date: June/July 1969

This woman is one of the most vibrant portraits in our collections. The girl with her in the check dress appears in another Wiltshire shot, taken in Moore Street, Dublin on the same day. The basket holder to the right is held by the woman in that photo. Looks to me as if the smiling woman is a stall holder. Would love to identify either of both of these Mystery Shoppers...

Passed this spot this morning and it looks exactly the same as when Elinor Wiltshire took this photo in late Autumn or early Winter of 1966.
Two little guys with their father/grandfather at the pond in Herbert Park, Dublin. One has his net for catching pinkeens, but thought the other might have been controlling a model boat?

The Pergola and covered walkway just above the far side of the pond sadly fell victim to the Snowpocalypse of winter 2010/2011 and collapsed under the weight of snow and ice. That aside, if you visit Herbert Park today, this scene is completely unchanged.

Two little guys with their father/grandfather at the pond in Herbert Park, Dublin. One has his net for catching pinkeens, but thought the other might have been controlling a model boat?
