Poets Patrick Kavanagh and Anthony Cronin at the church in Monkstown with the carriage in which they'd been proceeding about Dublin in the footsteps of Leopold Bloom, the main protagonist in Ulysses - 50 years after Bloom traversed the city in James Joyce's novel.

Rather nice panoramic view "up" O'Connell Street from the top of Nelson's Pillar. We think this was taken around 1950, but would love confirmation or suggestions to the contrary.

Very surprised when I zoomed in to see that the clock actually said Clery's Store - referred to by generations solely as Clery's!

Dromod Railway Station

Guinness Barge

This is the very neat and tidy "Castleknock" - a Guinness Barge - moored on the River Liffey in Dublin (53 years ago today). Niall McAuley provided a great link to the OSI Historic Maps showing this landing stage.

Meanwhile guliolopez unearthed a video of the "Castleknock" in action.

Have a read of this fantastic article on the Guinness Barges from the Heritage Boat Assocation website contributed by blackpoolbeach. Thanks one and all!

So many of our train shots show gleaming metal and shining livery, that we thought you might like this stripped back view inside the belly of the beast, with a shot of a train engine in the repair shop at (we thought) Arigna, Co. Roscommon.

However, while it may have been in the "repair shop" as the photographer James P. O'Dea called it, most commenters are in agreement that this engine was being dismantled or cannibalised for parts, scrap, etc. There are also suggestions that this photo was not taken at Arigna at all, but at nearby Ballinamore. As Flying Snail says:
"I don't think there was a loco repair shop at Arigna. The only workshops on the C&L [Cavan & Leitrim Line] were at Ballinamore, which was frequented heavily by photographers like O'Dea. This is where I suspect the photos is taken if it is a C&L machine we are looking at. The workshop buildings are now incorporated into a school, which the old station at Ballinamore was converted to after closure."

Men working in the aftermath of a derailment at Hybla/Ballyneage, Co. Kildare that happened on Thursday, 26 March 1959.

Next day's Irish Times reported:
"The main line to the South of Ireland was blocked yesterday after the derailment of a goods train between Kildare and Monasterevan. Part of the train's cargo was inflammable weed-killer and some of the drums burst, causing a fire. Fourteen of the 40 wagons were destroyed or damaged.
No one was injured in the mishap, but soon after he was informed by 'phone of the derailment Mr. John Wilson, permanent way inspector, Maryborough, collapsed and died in Mountrath. Mr. Wilson was a native of Arklow.
The train left the rails at Hybla, where a repair gang was working. One 45-foot length of rail had been removed for adjustment and the train ran in on this section. The driver was Mr. Michael Harrington, of Railway Cottages, Inchicore, Dublin, and the guard was Mr. Patrick Cassidy.
Three fire brigades were called to deal with the fire. The blaze was so intense that it melted metal sheeting. A big quantity of sugar was destroyed.
The firemen - from Portarlington, Monasterevan and Newbridge - kept the fire from spreading to the engine and a considerable number of wagon-loads of weed killer was salvaged. Two of the containers exploded while the brigades worked knocking down fireman Paddy Mullen, Of Monasterevan."

An Irish Railway Records Society special train excursion captured at Baltinglass, Co. Wicklow. Interesting to see some women in this photo, but maybe they were just locals who came out to see what all the fuss was about... We thought this station was closed for good soon after this photo was taken, and it's great to get confirmation of that from billh35 that "the station would close 6 days later on 21st March 1959".

Our Pic of the Day for New Year's Eve was the last train ever to run from Harcourt Street Station in Dublin on 31 December 1958. This photo was taken 13 days later and shows a very bereft platform in the abandoned station.

Kind of a sad one for our Pic of the Day from New Year's Eve in 1958. This is the last train ever to run from Harcourt Street Station in Dublin.

This photo ran in the Irish Independent on New Year's Day 1959, with an article describing the event. Here's an extract:
"An hour after the last train had left Harcourt Station at 4.25 p.m. yesterday the 100-year-old terminus bore a derelict look as a sad-faced staff locked up for the last time.
The departure of the last train will be long remembered by hundreds of people for among the 500 passengers, there were young children who were having their first and last train journey on that route.
Hundreds of people gathered at the station and outside to watch the end of the service. As the train moved out promptly on schedule fog signals exploded and passengers waved to the crowds on the platform.
With tears in her eyes, Mrs Maggie McLoughlin, of York St., who had been selling newspapers at the station for 39 years, said good-bye alone and unnoticed in a corner of the station.
At Bray hundreds of people were waiting on the station to greet the train as it arrived. Some young men attempted to remove fittings as souvenirs but were prevented by the Gardaí on duty."

This is Driver Joe beside his train at Monaghan Railway Station. This train was an Irish Railway Records Society Special Train, and you can see members of the Society fanning out over the tracks in the background.

According to MB89763733: "The railway to Monaghan closed 31st December that year and this was the last passenger train to use it. It officially closed to passengers 13.10.1957 but periodic specials such as GAA trains continued to operate."

Note the Customs and Excise sign behind Joe - Monaghan was Border country.

Members of the Irish Railway Record Society at York Road Station, Belfast. The I.R.R.S. was formed just 13 years before this photo was taken.

Believe that the new(ish) Yorkgate station was built on this site. if anyone could confirm that, it'd be great (or if you have any information on York Road station as it was at the time this photo was taken, it'd be very welcome too). Anybody able to identify people in the photo will go straight to the top of the class! Doesn't look as if the I.R.R.S. was inundated with female members at this time...
