We've visited Mr John Brennan at 27 Barronstrand Street, Waterford before, and seen his family portrait. Obviously Mr Brennan had moved on from dainty lingerie to a big push on men's hats in September 1928...
Oscar Traynor (under the X)

National Library of Ireland on The Commons posted a photo:

We were originally fairly sure this photo was taken on Monday, 10 July 1922, but wanted to know a lot more about it than we did. If correctly dated, this would have been taken 5 days after Oscar Traynor's anti-Treaty fighters had been defeated around O'Connell Street in Dublin, and 17 days before he was arrested and imprisoned in Gormanston Camp... We asked if any of you could help and there was a huge effort put into correctly dating this photo.

Thanks to everyone involved, but ultimately, we have to thank Siulach who commented:
"According to the Irish Independent, April 3, 1922, the Dublin City Brigade I.R.A. paraded at Smithfield on the 2nd "under officers who recognise the Executive established as a result of the recent Convention", and were addressed by Oscar Traynor, Rory O'Connor and F[rank] Henderson."

The dating of this photo is particularly useful to us, because it allows us to accurately date other W.D. Hogan photos taken at this spot on Sunday, 2 April 1922! And also allows us add the Holy Trinity of tags: Location Identified; People Identified; Date Established...
Not an Irish Civil War Prayer Vigil after all!

National Library of Ireland on The Commons posted a photo:

We thought that this W.D. Hogan photograph was taken during the Irish Civil War. The title on our catalogue was: "A prayer vigil, during the Irish Civil War, possibly in London" - at least we were partly right!

It had been suggested that this was taken in London, because it was stamped on the back with "Photo by The Press Photographic Agency, Johnson's Court, Fleet St., E.C.4.". Have to admit I wasn't initially convinced about London, but am absolutely happy to say that I was entirely wrong...

Have a look through the comments below, to see how the location of Downing Street in London was established by our Fantastic Flickroonies, and hence an accurate date for this photo... So we've achieved two of our Triumvirate of Terrificness - Date established and Location identified. If we identify any of the people, I may faint away with happiness! :)
Smiliest flower girls ever?

National Library of Ireland on The Commons posted a photo:

This much happier crew of flower girls were pictured at an O'Neill Power wedding. Rockfield is mentioned, and we've come across that location before, as home of the Gallweys in Tramore. But the O'Neill Powers lived at Power Hall, Kilkenny...
Today's photo was our 9th "unknown location" Fergus O'Connor photograph. Until today, 7 had been located. Had a feeling that this one, taken between 1900 and 1920, would be despatched with relative ease, but was super impressed with martindevlin who solved this mystery with impressive speed - it's now Garda Headquarters in the Phoenix Park, Dublin!

This is Mr John Brennan with his son, happily posing in the door of his drapery shop at 27 Barronstrand Street, Waterford (thanks Niall McAuley and desmondg47) now occupied by National Irish Bank.

I thought that the little guy looked familiar, and here's the whole family taken 7 months later.

Both window displays proudly proclaim John Brennan's stocking of all things Horrockses (and the mysterious Diaphalene), and there's great evidence of 1920s material, voile and curtain pricing in the right hand window, all prices presumably by the yard...

Locals and day trippers enjoying the sunshine at Rush, Co. Dublin. Like this one for the clear examples of the progression of wheeled transport - bicycle, motorbike and car. But I think there may be a horse in there as well (or perhaps a cow which ruins the whole "horse" power vibe). The car registration no. is YI 9567 or YI 9562, but it is definitely YI 956#.
Our reg. no. is YI 9567 or 9562, so would that give us a date of around 1926 rather than 1925?
Donnybrook Village

National Library of Ireland on The Commons posted a photo:

Our catalogue described this as a Street scene, possibly in Dublin: with motor cars, pedestrians and tramlines. I knew we could do better than that, hoping J. McCaffrey at no. 39 would be a help.

I was thinking Terenure-ish, but was absolutely wrong! Thanks a million to DannyM8 who suggested Donnybrook, and then backed it up with hard evidence from the 1911 census, finding John McCaffrey, greengrocer, (35) at 39 Donnybrook Road!

With regard to an accurate date for this photo, one of the Irish Times news posters trumpets Religious War in Mexico, and exactly that headline appeared on page 8 of the Irish Times on Monday, 15 August 1927, so that seems relatively safe for dating...

P.S. Love the alleged Confesserie! Did you confess your guilt for guzzling cream cakes here?

National Library of Ireland on The Commons posted a photo:

This are the owners and some of the staff of Messrs O'Gorman. We thought that these gentlemen had something to do with a garage (Automobile Engineers) on Parnell Street, Waterford, and that they may also have had a factory in Clonmel... Didn't take long for you guys to set us right (see fantastic comments below). Thanks one and all for the location and business info you dug up on the O'Gormans.

I reckon the three gentlemen in the front row are the O'Gorman Brothers. What think ye?

Thanks very much to Desktop 123 for the following fantastic information:
"This Photo was taken in front of 'Prior Park' house in Clonmel. It was his family house (right next to the Coach building factory). Prior Park house was demolished and a small group of houses built in its place (Prior Park estate). J.F. O'Gorman's son and daughter still live in the area."

blackpoolbeach provided us with this map showing Prior Park House.

Fantastic information in from Desktop 123 who identified J.L. O'Brien (sitting, front right); and William O'Keeffe (standing, 2nd from right); and Jack F. Croome (standing, 1st at left) and who also told us:
"The man on the front row with the impressive coat and boots, is renowned Major-General R.O. Kellett, C.B., C.M.G. He was a First Brigadier of 23rd Battalion Royal Fusiliers and was in action during the First World War in France. His son was a British MP, but sadly died in action during the 2nd World War."

Also according to Desktop 123, who went well above the call of duty on this photograph, the last two gentlemen not yet certainly identified are either William Fitzgerald, Edmond D.Ryan, or Patrick Stokes (directors of O'Gorman's).

This shot was taken at the Steeplechase for the Metropolitan Plate at Baldoyle Racecourse.

Apologies for poor photographic quality of this one, but thought it was good as an early action shot…

The Metropolitan Plate carried a purse of 500 sovereigns; second won 70 sovereigns and third won 25. It was a handicap steeplechase over 2½ miles, and the race started at 3.35 p.m.

Can anyone help with where this racecourse used to be, so that I can add it to our Flickr map?
Miss W. Mandeville, 21 February 1920

National Library of Ireland on The Commons posted a photo:

Meet the lovely Miss W. Mandeville of Anner Castle, near Clonmel, Co. Tipperary.

On really close inspection, think that Poole Photographic Studios gave Miss Mandeville what looks like a school text book to pose with...

John Spooner went well above and beyond the call of duty on this one, as there's quite a convoluted history to the Mandeville family. Most importantly however, we now know that W. stands for Winifred. See the comments below for details, but here's a summary from John:
"1889 Winifred Mary Mandeville born at Woolwich, the third of 3 sisters
1890 Her mother dies
1895 Her father marries again and they go on to have another 5 children
1920 She is photographed in a magnificent hat by A H Poole
1920 She marries a doctor, Henry Barton Owens and he starts practising in Northamptonshire
1921 Her husband Henry dies after 6 months of marriage
1933 She is still alive and hasn't remarried"

We were also thrilled to hear from BobMandeville who is a nephew of Winifred Mandeville/Owens. It is really lovely to hear from relatives of people in our photos. Bob said:
"Just to say that I am the son of John Parnell Mandeville, and Winifred Mary Owens was my aunt. Henry Barton Owens kept a diary throughout WW1 in which he put watercolours of the scenes that he saw - my uncle Desmond Mandeville placed this in the Imperial War Museum and this can be seen there if asked for. Some have said that the burning of Anner Castle provided a background for Rebecca (Daphne de Maurier) but this is probably fanciful. There is a view of the castle in the Clonmel library archives dating from 1854 approximately - and the castle has been available for renting for holidays for a number of years. This photograph shows Winifred at her happiest - she retained a glorious sense of humour till she died but there was always a certain sadness - not surprising really. Dr Henry Owens chest never recovered from the poison gas he inhaled when tending gassed soldiers. Winifred met him when he was in convalescence near her cousin (Springfield) in Norfolk. Bob Mandeville"

Brand spanking new, and a snip at £360 - this is the Vulcan Demonstration Van. Its chassis could take 20-25 cwt., and it was distributed by B.T. Lambert Ltd., 3 Cornmarket, Dublin.

From examining shots of the van from other angles, what we thought was the reg. no. seemed to be 0010 YI (definitely YI, but 0010 didn't sound right). Thanks to Bob Montgomery 2012 who explained that it was a trade plate rather than a registration plate...

I've transcribed the full text from the carving over the door of Reginald's Tower behind the van below...

The Poole Photographic Studio description gives this as boys in "fancy dress" at Waterpark College in Waterford city.

Given the attention that has been lavished on the costumes, and an adult conductor (music teacher?) sitting in the middle, we'd assume this was actually the cast of a school musical.
