Sad remains of Ballyellis House, Carnew, Co. Wexford (N.B. apparently there was a Ballyellis House in Cork also).

Wondering what happened to this house and its family, and hoping that it was a substantial enough event or series of events to have left some trace that we can find.

If this photograph had been taken in or after the early 1920s, I might have thought it had fallen prey to a purge of Big Houses, but this one could have been taken no later than 1914...

This is the Bandstand at Warrenpoint, Co. Down - complete with moustachioed band members? I think we can safely assume this was taken on a Sunday!

There's a poster on the bandstand, but it's not very clear. I can make out Pierrots and Mr. Fred [something beginning with W? maybe Walmsley?]. I think the date on it is Sunday [??] July [??].

This is Victoria Barracks (now Collins Barracks) in Cork. Nice selection of uniforms, and I'm hoping that the helmet/cap insignias can identify the regiment, and hence maybe the approximate date of this photo.

Love this line up of men, boys, donkeys and dog outside Ballydehob in Co. Cork!

The dog owner is absolutely ensuring that his dog is recorded for posterity by holding the dog immobile. Amazingly Donkey #1 is also holding his pose perfectly face on to the camera, while Donkey #2 is adamant that his best side is captured.

And what's going on with the boy at extreme right - singing? reciting? yawning?

This photograph was irresistible because of the Holy Grail of not just one but two news posters that are for once (Huzzah!) legible.

I've uploaded a detail of the two posters for clarity. I'm getting Friday May [??], but if that combination of headlines doesn't help date this one, then I'm giving up and running away to join a circus or maybe even The London Clown Cricketers!

Thrilled to spot this mobile cutler! Either he's Mr Burns or he worked for Burns, Cutler.

Didn't know where this was, and in fact, thought it might be somewhere in Co. Down, but derangedlemur identified it in record time as Dundalk Courthouse.

Next door was Bernard Dooley with Post Cars for Hire

Then a Fancy Emporium

Very atmospheric photo altogether taken by Elinor Wiltshire at Dublin's Marshalsea Barracks.

Because of Little Dorrit, Marshalsea conjures up the idea of a debtors' prison for me. Is that what it originally was, does anyone know, even if it was an ex-Barracks by the time this was taken in 1969?

It first caught my attention because of the D.I.Y. "High Cross" at bottom right, which you can see here in all its glory...

Bizarre construction altogether that can be seen here too. Did the plinth operate as a market stall?

We had no idea where this was, so many thanks to Leonard Bentley for identifying it as being beside St. Mary's Church, Athenry, Co. Galway!
