One of most beautiful sub-temple of the large Tofukuji complex is certaintly the Reiun-in.

The Reiun-in sub temple was built in 1390 but the garden was reconstructed as recently as 1970 along the lines of an earlier Edo period garden.

The garden was designed by Mirei SHIGEMORI in 1970, the 'dry landcape (枯山水）' garden in the south-eastern corner represents the 9 mountains and 8 oceans in the Buddhist utopia.
