I'm doing a Picture a Week via the View 52: A Year in pictures Group. www.flickr.com/groups/view52/
For my View 52 I have decided to do a different theme every four week. For Weeks 13-16 I am going to be taking photographs in and around Calke Abbey in Derbyshire.

At the back of the house is the stable area, and beyond that are four ponds. In front of the house the ground rises and about a 10 minute walk away are the formal walled gardens and orangery and vegetable plots. Close to this are a number of buildings to support the running of this area, including the one above which is the gardeners potting shed.

Calke Abbey is referred to as the "unstately home" because during the 20th century in particular the house and estate went into a decline, nothing was ever thrown away and much of what you see there is as it has been for decades, if not hundreds of years.

Two of my ancestors were gardeners on the Calke Estate so it is highly likely they worked at that bench, looked out of those windows and even used some of the implements and pots you see here. Sadly both of them died on the estate, and below is an extract from the newspaper reporting their death.

"Sad Affair - A sad affair occurred at Calke on Wednesday. An aged man named Sa(u)nders whose mind was impaired, got into one of the fish ponds at Calke Abbey. His son, who was watching him, tried to rescue him, but was unfortunately drawn under the water, and both men were drowned. The son leaves a wife and a family of six or seven children". So my Week 14 is in remembrance of my ancestors.

Most of my processing to date has just been adjusting sliders in the RAW converter and sharpening but I've had a go at adding a couple of filters on this one.

This one fits the "cheering up" bill nicely with blue skies and sea.

Taken with my compact which has an aperture range of f/3.5-f8. Stayed in this lovely place for one night before moving on to Whitby. It was a fairly grey morning, but made the best of it by going fossil hunting, before the weather brightened around lunch time.

Whitby Watercolour

Some photos taken may not be perfect exposures but might still have a certain something worth saving. On this I was shooting towards the sun and the sky was overexposed. I've converted the file twice and added a watercolour filter. Taken on May Day bank holiday Monday at about 7.45am. The flags were there from the Royal Wedding 3 days previously.

Probably one of the most photographed scenes in Whitby - the 199 steps upto the Church and Abbey. This was probably taken about 7.45am but there was no-one about on this bank holiday Monday. (Oops just spotted a bit of dust on this one). Stayed at the Royal Hotel, top left of picture.

Holiday shot of Whitby Harbour on May Day Bank Holiday. It was 7.30am so only a couple of people about. Used the opportunity to practice landscape shots for my 2011 Practical Photography Course Module 2 on Landscapes.
