Qu'est-ce que tu veux de moi? / Cap Blanc Nez / Sunset

zzapback posted a photo:

About this shot
On top of the Cap Blanc Nez, highest point (134m) of the French white cliffs. I just had to shoot a sunset from there. Unfortunately there wasn't much of any foreground attraction, so I took a dive into the wild flowers.

Qu'est-ce que tu veux de moi? I wonder - and it's also a question I ask myself.

Let me rephrase (first take was maybe too confronting) what I actually meant to say...

I'm here - in the first place - to become a better photographer, to get creative, to be inspired - and hopefully to inspire as well. I put as much effort in my shots as I can, yet sometimes it's kinda frustrating to see that - in general - social interaction instead of inspirational photography is what keeps people going over here. Were flicking through each others photo albums superficially, but what do we see? Is it inspiring? Does it matter?
Ce que je veux? Qu'est-ce que tu veux de moi?

NEXT! ;-)

THX for viewing folks! Faves and comments are always welcome! Have a nice day.
Sunset and low tide near Cap Blanc Nez / Sangatte / Cote d'Opale

Check it out on black [L] or at 1280x850 pixels.

Brought my 1500 D700 shots of 16 days Cote d'Opale back to one thousand... plenty of missed oportunities, wrong settings, blown out skies, dirty lenses, waterdrops on the lens etc, etc. Duh!

About this shot
Tricky stuff walking along the French cliffs at sunset, you really need a tides table to avoid getting in trouble. 5 meters of water level difference, from smashing waves against the cliffs to an empty space of almost one kilometer, with a couple of surprises in between.

Not easy planning a sunset shoot. This is at a distance of over half an hour to the next beach/cliff stairs, no (smart)phone range here, not another soul in sight - and the water is too far away! Bugger!

I found out I *really* need to get my set-up of ND hard and soft grads!
To HDR... / Westminster Palace / London

Check it out on black or at 1280 x 850 pixel if you please.

About this shot
I'm trying to distract you lot from this 'done to death tourist angle' with a tiny comparison game: which shot do you prefer? The HDR version (above) or the single shot (below, clickable)?

Yesterday I told you that I'm almost cured of my HDR *weakness*, and I had this sort of discussion with Jan Kranendonk about the pros and cons of bracketing/High Dynamic Range.

I shot a lot of bracketing in London (almost 3000 shots during one week). But while processing I ended up using just a little of my bracketed stuff. I explained it had to do with my new Nikon D700 with its full frame sensor and its flexible and noiseless RAW images it produces. This gives me the possibility to get a lot of light and details back, even in the darkest corners. That way I don't need all those bracketed shots anymore. It saves me a lot of hard disk space and a *lot* of processing time and effort.

With my London shots I processed most of my images as single RAW shots in Photoshop CS5. I used a couple of bracketed series too, and processed them with Photomatix Pro. Most of the time when comparing the outcome I'd go for the more natural looking single images and continued to post them on Flickr.

The shot from Westminster Palace was really difficult to judge for me... that's why I'm asking you! Thx for looking and sharing your opinion - if you feel like it!
HELLO!

zzapback posted a photo:

Excuse me for this below par picture, btw!*

I got you all worried, eh? ;-)

Here's the news: I never thought I'd make the jump to Nikon Full Frame. Too big, too heavy, too expensive etc. But when you bump into the limitations of... say a D90, you start to look further.

I was planning to get a Nikon D300(s) but I found out it had exactly the same sensor as the D90.
The D7000 was a possibility, new sensor, better ISO performance... but it still had those funny settings like 'portrait', 'nightshot', 'sports' and all that.

I also kept an eye on a couple of my contacts with a D700 (*cough* Scott Wilson *cough*) and I could see what an excellent machine it was and what it's capable of... so I decided to go for a second hand D700.

I picked it up yesterday! Boy am I happy! It felt like a giant leap, but within 24h I already feel pretty comfortable with it. Heavy manual research, upgraded firmware, toying around... amazing what kind of pictures you get out of it even at 3200 ISO, it borders on the insane! (just like me actually - at the mo', hehe)

Selling a couple of lenses now to 'create' some money for other glass.

My wishlist - short term Sigma 12-24mm (12mm on FX will blow you away!) and the Nikon 16-35mm f/4 or 17-35 f/2.8 second hand. Also a second hand Nikon 80-200 ED f/2.8, anyone?

Wishlist - long term Nikon 14-24mm, Nikon 24-70, Nikon 70-200mm (all f/2.8) Donations welcome! ;-)

Like Chicago sang: "Only the beginning. Only just the start!"

Ta Flickr folks! :-)
