Marchen Haus ( which translates to Fairytale House) was built in 1928 and was one of Hugh Comstock's largest homes.

It has been described as a "cross-axial confection". A local critic described the chimney as neither round, square or rectangular. It is fantastic in its grotesque mis-shapen form."

Carmel has designated this house as "historic" which means its can not be changed in any significant way.

It had been overgrown and somewhat neglected looking until recently. The current resident has put lots of loving care into the house. Now the yard is a tidy haven for birds with feeders always busy. The windows are often open and smoke rises from the chimney.

This Carmel Cottage was built in 1931 by M.J. Murphy for the Hasenyager family. Its heritage is French Tudor with Norman influences. One of the most delightful features to me is the well tended and ornate garden

This is another photo of the Gate House cottage built in 1940 in Carmel-by -the Sea. It was built in the tradition of the nineteenth-century vernacular architecture of the English countryside. Some sources say it was built by Charles Van Riper, author and real estate invester. Others say it was built by an old sea captain who became " locked to land" by age and fate.

Number 7 is an older cottage with a dutch door. The weather is such that the top half of the doors are often left open. This is a detail shot taken at Happy Landing Inn - a Bed and Breakfast in Carmel. Quaint and dog friendly.

This bench is in a small courtyard outside a side entrance to the church called the Bride's Entrance. I doubt many a bride took time to admire it . I envision the bridal party gathered here, waiting to go in. I can hear the bridesmaids giggles still hovering in the air.

Through this rose covered entry is a tiny cemetery. Each grave has a small twig cross and is outlined with abalone shells. And on each grave a single "coral bell" was blooming

There are many nooks and crannies to explore. This is taken in a back courtyard. Artists are setting up their easels to paint the scene, tourists wander around and in the background you hear the school children reciting their lessons.

The fairy tale cottages of Carmel are one of it's most charming aspects. Front gates and gardens are common. Trees are most valued and houses are built around their limbs. Carmel was meant to be an artist's retreat in the forest.

The Old Convento wing of the Carmel Mission houses the museum dedicated to the Founder of the California Mission Chain, Fray Junipero Serra. Found inside this structure are the Padre’s kitchen, living room, guest dining room and refectory. The room that houses California’s First Library (founded by Serra in 1770) was originally one of the Padre’s cells or bedrooms but houses the library artifacts as the site of the original library has not been restored .
