While the Occupy Wall Street protesters were bring arrested on the Brooklyn Bridge (or approximately an hour before) I decided to take this photo. I've been super busy lately but hopefully things will die down soon. After missing about two reservations for the 9/11 Memorial, I will be there on October 12, 2011. Any suggestions?

A night of rain and fog and yet the lights still shrine through and light the heavens. A testament to how effective these lights are; when you see them, you contemplate and remember. Hard to see from this picture but the construction workers at One World Trade Center have clad the tower in red, white and blue.

A Preview of the 2011 Tribute in Light (9/11 Memorial)

As they usually do, they were testing the lights in preparation for 9/11. In years past I understood why they had the tribute in lights at the parking garage but I don't fully understand why not at the memorial this year. I think it would be stunning to have the lights at the exact footprints of the old towers. It may be a safety/territory thing (PANY/NJ versus Municipal Arts Society of New York).

Embarrassment Vanished: The Deutsche Bank Building Gone

I know I am late on commenting on the demolition of the Deutsche Bank building, but since I created and posted this panorama, I also wanted to express my views. Many New Yorkers know about the Deutsche Bank building demolition saga but sadly, both pre 9/11 and post, the building has been in the World Trade Center's shadow. The following is a brief timeline:

2002: RJ Lee Group, after spending $33 million on studies, concludes that "a combination of contaminants known to be hazardous to human health, in quantities and concentrations unparalleled in any other building designed for office use, permeates the entire structure at levels which exceed by up to thousands of times the levels considered appropriate for Class A office buildings." They list substances such as asbestos, lead, mercury, dioxin, and other toxins. The cost of the evaluation is $33 million. Deutsche Bank demands that its four insurers pay its total policy value of $1.7 billion.

2004: In February 2004, Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (LMDC) agrees to buy "the building for $90 million and assume responsibility for a $45 million contract to take it down. The insurers paid Deutsche Bank $140 million and agreed to cover 75% of any costs above the $45 million assumed by the LMDC. Politicians and planners sighed with relief. "This could've dragged on for years," Pataki said at the press conference that day." The private failure of Deutsche Bank has now become a public liability. "Fortune's review of six years of SEC filings, including a footnote in one dated March 27, 2007, shows that Deutsche Bank "received aggregated payments from the four insurers and the [LMDC] totaling U.S. $1 billion" for its damaged building (and one much smaller satellite office behind it)." "...Deutsche Bank booked a gain of more than $250 million."

March 2006: A worker was injured after falling 40 feet.

May 17, 2007: A 15-foot length of pipe fell from the 35th floor, plunged through the roof of the adjacent firehouse, and mildly injured two firefighters.

August 18, 2007: On August 18, 2007 at approximately 3:40pm, a seven-alarm fire broke out on the 17th floor of the building, caused by workers smoking, carelessly and in violation of the building's safety rules. The building had not been inspected since March, when it should have been inspected every 15 days. The fire burned into the night before being extinguished. The fire killed two firefighters, Joseph Graffagnino, 33, of Brooklyn, and Robert Beddia, 53, of Staten Island, who succumbed on the 14th floor to smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning, and injured 115 firefighters, 46 seriously enough to require medical leave.

2009: Project resumes

2011: Demolition Completed.

Total Cost to Taxpayers: $266 Million

At least we can all agree that Hummus is delicious. Captured while a protester was standing in line for some food. I figured the protester was a real New Yorker as New Yorkers usually don't eat hot dogs from street vendors but more frequently eat from Halal food carts (totally unsubstantiated by empirical evidence, just my observations).

Some of the would-be protesters mistakenly fell for stereotypes.

On Church Street, Kamal Ramdas, 57, a dark-skinned Muslim born in Guyana and now living in Queens, drew jeers and catcalls for his clothing: an all-white long robe and white skull cap.

"Islam is a religion of hate," a woman screamed at him.

"Shut up!" others barked.

Yet Kamal's message is anti-Muslim.

"The Koran is not a holy book," he said, carrying a copy of the American Constitution. "Mohammed was not a prophet."

9/11/2001: Never Forget

The Tribute in Light is an art installation of 88 searchlights placed next to the site of the World Trade Center to create two vertical columns of light in remembrance of the September 11 attacks.

It initially ran as a temporary installation from March 11 to April 14, 2002, and was launched again in 2003 to mark the second anniversary of the attack. As of 2009, it has been repeated every year on September 11. It had been announced that 2008 would be its final year,[1] but the tribute was continued in 2009.[2] On December 17, 2009, it was confirmed that the tribute would continue through to the tenth anniversary of the attacks in 2011.

On clear nights, the lights could be seen from over 60 miles away, visible in all of New York City and most of suburban Northern New Jersey and Long Island, Fairfield, Connecticut, Westchester County and Rockland County, New York. The beams were clearly visible from the terrace at Century Country Club in Purchase, New York, from at least as far west as western Morris County, in Flanders, New Jersey, and as far south near Trenton, New Jersey in nearby Hamilton.
Since 2008, the generators that power Tribute in Light have been fueled with recycled biodiesel.[4]

Finding support for their ideas, they joined forces in the spirit of the rescue and recovery effort downtown. The creative team consists of architects John Bennett and Gustavo Bonevardi of PROUN Space Studio, artists Julian LaVerdiere and Paul Myoda, architect Richard Nash Gould, and lighting designer Paul Marantz. Production support was provided by two non-profit cultural institutions The Municipal Art Society and Creative Time, with the assistance of Battery Park City Authority.

The 2010 National Flag of Honor and the National Flag of Heroes in Battery Park (2010 9/11 Memorial)

The National Flag of Honor and the National Flag of Heroes were created by John Michelotti for three main reasons: (1)"To immortalize the individual victims that were killed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001." (2)"To give comfort to the families left behind knowing that their loved one will be forever honored and remembered." (2)"To create an enduring symbol, recognized by the world, of the human sacrifice that occurred on September 11, 2001."
The Flag of Honor and the Flag of Heroes are based on the American flag. They both have the names of all the innocent people who were killed in the September 11 attacks printed on the red and white stripes of the American Flag. Both flags have a white space across the bottom with the name of the flag and a description printed in black. The Flag of Honor reads: "This flag contains the names of those killed in the terrorist attacks of September 11. Now and forever it will represent their immortality. We shall never forget them" The Flag of Heroes reads: " This flag contains the names of the emergency service personnel who gave their lives to save others in the terrorist attacks of September 11. Now and forever it will represent their immortality. We shall never forget them."

The 9/11 Memorial

A shot of the South Tower right after sunset. The memorial itself is elegant in its simplicity. In terms of photography, the memorial is challenging to shoot. The immensity of the site plus the security ban on tripods makes it very difficult.
