Desolation Valley, Desolation Wilderness, Ca.

Summer is creeping up on us pretty quickly and I'm already getting excited about my annual Sierra backpacking trip. So excited that I went back to last year's images and dug up some old unprocessed ones.

Here's sunrise over an unnamed lake in Desolation Valley. This was actually a pretty complicated image to put together. It is a the frame vertical stitch but I bracketed each original frame with two or three exposures. In CS4 I started by processing all the images with the same white balance and tones etc. Then did manual blending between the different exposures for consistency. Then came away with three images ready to be stitched. Then did the final touch ups as one single image. Probably more work than I wanted to put into this image...

First Light

Sunrise, Desolation Valley, Desolation Wilderness, Ca.

This is an unnamed lake in Desolation Valley South of Lake Aloha. First light illuminating the Crystal Range beyond the lake. Mt Price, Mt Agassiz, Aaron's Peak and Pyramid Peak can be seen here.

Maybe someone can help me out with this one... Are there really TWO mountains called "Mt. Agassiz" in the Sierra? I've found a lot of references to the middle peak here being Mt. Agassiz (even though Google maps doesn't list it) and there is a Mt. Agassiz further South in the Palisades. Anyone have any insight into this?

Lion In the Grass

The very first animal we encountered while on safari last year was a Lion - talk about starting off with a bang. Here a young male Lion lounges in the savanna grass after sharing a meal with his three sisters.

Stop Rhino Poaching

I usually don't blatantly tackle animal crisis but I feel compelled to today (hence the title). Rhino poaching has skyrocketed out of control in South Africa recently. This is very dear to me because I was able to see the magnificent creatures first hand while on safari last year in South Africa. In the last 5 years 1,600 Rhinos have been killed in South Africa alone. About 74% of Africa's Rhino population resides in South Africa. There are estimated to be less than 4,900 Black Rhino and 1,800 White Rhinos left. All the Rhino species are threatened and the Black Rhino is considered endangered. The Rhino population is declining rapidly and heading towards extinction. At this rate, Rhinos are estimated to be extinct by 2025. That's not far away.

Countries like China, Vietnam and Taiwan currently import Rhino horns with the belief that it contains medicinal properties. While it has been proved erroneous and it is illegal it is still happening with great frequency.

Desolate Milkyway

The Milkyway, from Desolation Wilderness. This was taken from camp on my backpacking trip last year. Every star that you see is actually in the Milkyway but we commonly refer to the streak across the sky as the Milkyway. The Milkyway is our Galaxy, which is shaped similar to Saturn and it's rings. Consider the milky streak of stars across our sky to be the rings as seen from within itself. The Sierra is always awesome for night photography.

Territorial Hippo

Here's one from my Hippo series from my South African safari last year. After watching this Hippo and a young calf float around in the water for a while, they decided they wanted to move further away from us so we got to watch them walk across a shallow berm for a moment (the only time we saw Hippo's out of water).

Here you'll notice the spray all around where it is walking. The Hippo is urinating and it waves its tail back and forth rapidly to scatter the urine around to mark its territory. They are territorial and quite aggressive while in water.

ALSO in the above image if you look closely enough just to the left of the bush at the waters edge you will see the top of a Crocodile with its mouth open. Our guide pointed out that they sit with their mouth open to feed on insects that land in their mouth - easy pickings huh?

African Penguin With Chicks II

Boulders Beach, South Africa.

African Penguins by the hundreds mate and breeding on Boulders Beach just outside of Cape Town, South Africa. A boardwalk gets you to within mere feet of them. Here you'll find two chicks seeking shelter under an adult. The adult is calling here (not sure why). Their nickname is the "Jackass Penguin" because of their Donkey like bray. You can hear it here.

Least Tern Mating Ritual

Least Terns, Huntington Beach, Ca.

Dug up this image from a while back...

The Least Terns return to this beach every year in May to nest. The male Least Tern will offer a fish as a gift to the female in an attempt to woo her into mating. Sometimes, as I've witnessed, the female will take the fish and run, leaving the male high and dry, as you can see
in this next photo.

A "Black Widow" has been defined as a disingenuous woman who exploits her position in a relationship to the detriment of her partner.

Common Yellowthroat's actually aren't all that common. At least for me... They're especially hard to snap a quality shot of because they are so damn jumpy. They don't seem to sit still for more than 5 or 6 seconds. I get pretty excited when I can actually get usable photos.

A huge colony of African Penguins use Boulders Beach as a nesting site. You'll find them there year round though. Take the boardwalk and literally get with in arms reach of hundreds of them. This one is coming ashore after a fishing trip.

Watson Lake is a small lake on the North Eastern edge of Prescott, Arizona. It reminds me of a Joshua Tree meets Lake Powell. I shot a wedding in Prescott a few weeks ago and decided I had to come back with a landscape shot. So I braved the cold weather (16 degrees to be exact - windchill brought it down to 4!) for a sunrise shot. Notice the parts of the lake that are frozen over...

This was the first wildlife we rolled up on on our safari last April. Four young Lions were lounging lazily on the grass in the savanna. Their bellies were full from a night of feasting on a kill. So full I imagine that they laid here all day long. Made for some great close ups at 10 feet away.
