North, South, East or West...? This weekend it was North!

This castle has a very sad history ending with it being requisitioned by the army during World War II. It was finally vacated in the 1950s and is now a derelict shell.

I used to curse this castle, as, when shot from the Inveraray road it is almost camouflaged by the hills behind. Anyway, that's no longer the case - after all these years I got to shoot it from the other sides, and it's now in my top 5!!

Kilchurn Castle was built c1450 by Sir Colin Campbell the first Lord of Orchy. Funny, as my elder daughter goes to school with a Colin Campbell who also lives in a castle....but not this one.

We literally stumbled upon this place. An entire village built to service the construction of the Skerryvore Lighthouse (classified as one of the world's most graceful lighthouses).

This is the purpose built signalling tower at Hynish which was the only communication channel to the lighthouse construction site in the 1830-40s. They seemingly used semaphore and what must have been a very large telescope to send messages back and forth. Mind blowing, and possibly a time bound view:

One of the huge benefits of travelling alone with your dog is that you can stop where you want, when you want, for as long as you want.

Can't recommend it enough. At 1350 feet we weren't surprised to wake up to snow on Tuesday morning,

The steamer used to leave from here to take guests to the hunting lodge at the other end of the loch.

Payback time for dragging Keith round abandoned mansions....his turn to drag me up a hill. Stunning day out, Buster & I wimped out of the bad step...but as I'd done it last time when I was 6lbs lighter, 6yrs younger and 6 times fitter I didn't feel too bad.

I came here on Tuesday after dropping stuff off at the dump. Intended to do long exposures, but the weather changed while I was there, so came home with this.

Met some lovely people while I was here, including an old man who told me all about the history of the building and the fire that began it's demise, and the system of coal shafts that run below the estate.

Oh and there were also those daft council workers who kept driving by the tripod really slowly in their van hoping they were getting caught on film...we had a laugh, but they have a bit to learn about 2min exposures ;)
