The 1000' James R. Barker moored in a dense fog in Marquette's upper harbor as it awaits a load of iron ore. A very thick fog blanketed the area for a couple days and the sound of foghorns along the shoreline was ever present.

Nighthawk Feeding Frenzy

I drove up to Cattail Cove State Park in April, while on vacation in Arizona, looking for an Owl I had seen a few nights earlier, but instead I found myself right in the middle of a Nighthawk feeding frenzy. I estimated 10-15 Hawks were flying around me. They didn't seem to care that I was there and came so close at times that I could hear their feathers rustling, their beaks chomping, and their Nighthawk night calls. I even had to duck 3 times...they came so close. One of the most unique experiences of my life. Extremely difficult shots.

Yesterday, I spent hours taking pics of The Black Rocks at Presque Isle Park in Marquette, MI. 30 mph winds brought heavy seas and cold temps to the rocks...I was chilled to the bone by the end of the shoot, but completely satisfied with the mood of Lake Superior. She never lets me down.

The other night I was hanging out with some friends around a campfire when I noticed this in a tree about 10 feet away. After about 15 minutes he/she launched into the air and in the process gained about 5 feet in lift, over a 20 foot glide, and as it neared the tree it made a hard left turn and landed on the backside. Pretty cool to see!

A mid spring storm brought cold temperatures and about 4 inches of snow to the U.P. But it also brought waves, and when she builds them, she calls them, and they come. These surfers traveled all the way from Chicago and Milwaukee to surf the Great Lake.
