One of the limitations of landscape photography is its expectation of reality. You can't take a lake photo, add an exploding volcano in the background, a unicorn prancing along its shores, a flaming sunrise, and still reasonably call it a photo. But in portrait photography, as I'm discovering, the same limitations just don't exist. Any scene I want to create, or any emotion I want to explore, I can. Have a girl riding in a hot air balloon above the clouds at sunrise, on a quest for adventure? No expectation of reality here. It's an amazingly liberating way of making images.

Thanks for looking, and check out some behind the scenes images below.

Better Big on Black!

Last Sunday Diego Tabango and I were hired to shoot film composer Marlon Espino at his recording studio in Carmel. After Marlon sent us some snapshots of the studio I immediately got the idea to do a shot like this where all the cool elements of the studio were being lit up with strobes. And of course your ideas change as soon as they meet reality but in the end I'm really happy with how close this came to my original vision.

Strobist info: Einstein through beauty dish, above camera on axis for key light. Gridded soft box behind Marlon camera left for rim. Bare strobe camera right for rim. Then 16 individual blasts from a bare strobe on a paint pole with Diego VALing for me on all the elements in the background. Layers combined using "Lighten" blend mode and simple layer masking.

Processing involved some fill light, curves layer for contrast, some dodging of the shadows, and a Nik Color Efex Detail Extractor layer to pull out the the richness in the studio.

Thanks for looking!

...for seascape photographers in the summer in Santa Cruz. A high pressure front moves in and creates the ever-feared marine layer: a thick fog bank which obscures and eliminates all color from the sky. Not that there are any clouds in the sky anyway. :(

So what to do when nature isn't providing the light I crave? Simple: start creating my own light.
Diego "strobin' it" Tabango and I have been taking to the streets of Santa Cruz, armed with an array of small flashes and light modifiers, working on our lighting, and shooting some sweet portraits.

Here's one of Diego thuggin' it up in our shoot in some random alley a week ago. Totally different track than what I normally shoot, but tons of fun all the same!
