Unveiled: UK's tallest free-standing artwork set to dwarf Angel of the North

The Aspire tower at the University of Nottingham yesterday became the tallest piece of free-standing artwork in the country when the final section was bolted in to place.

Standing 196ft (60m) over the university's Jubilee campus, the steel lattice structure resembles a cross between an ice cream cone and a whisk, and is designed to represent 'limitless ambition', according to a university spokesman.

The tower is three times as tall as the Angel of the North and is 13ft (4m) taller the Manchester's B of the Bang, the country's previous record holder as the tallest freestanding artwork.

At almost 200ft tall it will pose a serious challenge to even the most determined student prankster.

Constructed over ten weeks at a cost of £800,000, the tower is the brainchild of architect Ken Shuttleworth - who also designed the 'Gherkin' building in London - and was funded by an anonymous benefactor.

The Sir Colin Campbell Building — named after the University’s Vice-Chancellor from 1988-2008 — provides a gateway between the Jubilee Campus and the new Innovation Park. Designed by MAKE architects and built by Rok SOL, it accommodates the University’s Technology Transfer Office, exhibition and meeting rooms and an innovation centre providing high quality space with flexible growing space for small companies and start-ups.

The building features high-performance, highly-insulated facades which are less than 50 per cent glazed and oriented to ensure good levels of natural lighting while avoiding excessive solar gain. Instead of conventional fossil fuel powered chillers and boilers, all heating and cooling is delivered by a renewable energy source using heat exchangers in on-site lakes. The predicted carbon emissions are 55 per cent less than current building regulation requirements. Construction involved installing a 40-tonne steel bridge over Triumph Road to link the two sides of the building.
