Giant statues of the Majoreros

On the hilly road to Betancuria (one time capital of Fuerteventuria) stand these magnificent statues of the original indigenous population (Majoreros) who were wiped out when the Europeans arrived in the 15th century.
Even more magnificent is the view ...!

I was trying to get a low-angle close-up of this sea lion with the horizon in the background. Moving forward while looking through the lens, I was much closer than I realized ... until the sea lion barked loudly, causing a minor heart flutter. Major breach of Galapagos beach etiquette!

I know everyone else has taken a shot at this ... but I still feel I've brought something of my own to this amazing object.

Sky Mirror is a public sculpture by artist Anish Kapoor. Commissioned by the Nottingham Playhouse from the artist, it is installed outside the theatre in Wellington Circus, Nottingham, England. Sky Mirror is a six-metre-wide concave dish of polished stainless steel weighing ten tonnes and angled up towards the sky. Its surface reflects the ever-changing environment.
It took six years from the initial idea for a major new piece of public art to the unveiling of Sky Mirror on 27 April 2001, and cost £900,000.[1] At the time, it was the most expensive piece of civic art funded by the National Lottery.[citation needed] It was manufactured in Finland.
In autumn 2007 the Nottingham Playhouse Sky Mirror was voted Pride of Place in a poll to find Nottingham's favourite landmark.

Having tracked down my Galapagos shots from an old hard drive, I'm enjoying the trip all over again by discovering forgotten and overlooked images.

Described as "hideous-looking", "stupid" and "sluggish" by Charles Darwin, these Marine Iguanas on Espanola Island are spectacularly colourful, especially in the breeding season.

This one looks as though he's posing for the camera, but in fact - like virtually all the wildlife in the Galapagos - he seemed sublimely indifferent to all human activity ...

Tree Stump by the Lake

I have taken hundreds of shots of this mutilated, hollow tree stump.

Finally, I'm reasonably happy with this one:
the water is still enough to provide reflections;
the light is bright enough to bring out the contours of the stump without overwhelming the b/g;
there are some clouds to add texture to the sky.

I started out in photography creeping up on and annoying grey herons and I'm still doing it - although I like to think I have a little more knowledge and a touch more more patience nowadays!

A perfect moment

Early morning at one of my favourite haunts (Highfields Park, Nottingham).

This heron was unmissable, not moving a muscle in the still water.

I have never taken a picture of a heron which was not completely aware of what I was doing, and this one was no exception. I moved around quietly and gently in order not to break the moment, trying out different angles to get the best combination of light and reflection.

I have never found a similar combination of conditions in the six years since I took this.
