Don't Be Shy

Nikon F100 ... Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 ... Fuji Neopan 1600 ... Epson V600

I should've composed this better because I totally didn't notice the out of focus girl until AFTER I took a photo of him face to face (when she asked if it was alright if she fed them). In retrospect there were a lot of great photo opportunities with that girl but I just didn't pull the trigger because I'm a bit rusty from not taking pictures as consistently as I should.

This may be off-topic but for those of you who don't know me, but I'm a math major looking to go into education. However, with exams and such I realize that math isn't exactly my passion. I spend most of my off time on Flickr Explore and my contacts pages trying to take a little bit of information with each shot I look through. I find art so captivating. I've always been in love with music and poetry from a young age. I used to write poems at the age of 9 until 14 and then got into writing lyrics. From real hip hop to funk to alternative rock to jazz to west African to Latin American to classic rock to just anything with soul. Hence why I try to capture as much soul in my pictures as I possibly can. I'm trying hard to find the soul in math but I feel soulless in my math classes. Granted I enjoy learning it, and I like the challenge, but the absence of soul is something that neglects it from being a passion in my life.

I'm not quite sure what I want to do with my life but I'm glad I have photography to express myself and to also feel the soul that many of my contacts and the pictures on Flickr Explore have captured. Some days I wish I could've found photography when I was a teenager and gone to an art school but perhaps my journey through photography wouldn't have been the same. Even though I'm not always happy with the pictures I take or put up, I'm always happy that I went out and explored the city to find interesting subjects and people.. even if it means that out of a roll of film there are only 3-4 usable exposures.

Anyways sorry for the short little rant. Maybe I should listen to some Pharcyde before I decide to make one of these in the future.

One of my friend's showed me this ridiculous thing called "Rap Map" which basically indicated the various landmarks of Hip Hop in New York. A lot of them were quite ridiculous but it motivated an idea I already wanted to do... so I picked up my bike the very next day and rode my bike from Brooklyn to the Queensbridge Housing Projects, the largest public housing complex in America. Birthplace of some of the best MC's I grew up listening to (Nas, Mobb Deep, Mic Geronimo, Juice Crew, Cormega, Tragedy Khadafi, etc..).

This picture pays homage to the music I grew up listening to and my favorite album of all time.. Illmatic (picture)

Explored.

So I started trying to get better at landscape photography and I didn't exactly feel that my 50mm lens was wide enough to get some shots I wanted. Being a college students sucks because at the moment I can't afford the Nikkor 20mm f/2.8 lens that's been haunting my dreams. So instead of moaping around, I decided to use my little brother's kit Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G DX lens instead. Yes I am using a DX lens on a full-frame camera but you gotta work with what you got haha.

Nikon F100 ... Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 ... Fuji Neopan 1600 ... Epson V600

On my bike after dropping my girlfriend off at ballroom practice I rode in Washington Square Park and came across this guy that had pigeons flying around him. There must have been atleast 30 pigeons around him. And if you got close, the pigeons would also fly onto you and hang out on your arm or head. It was quite interesting and apparently the guy trains the pigeons from his home. I could only wonder how it looks when he's walking down the street.
