Cloud capped Mt. Fuji | Lake Saiko, Yamanashi

A HDR photo taken from the shore of Lake Saiko with Mt. Fuji in the background. Since we had a full day of shooting it was easy to try a little bit of everything. Black & white, color, panorama, and HDR.

A panorama taken from above Lake Yamanakako. The cloulds that had kept Mt. Fuji hidden for most of the morning were just starting to break up.

Made using multiple frames and stitched together in Photoshop CS5.

This was taken from a lookout spot above Lake Yamanakako. A light dusting of snow had fallen overnight on the peaks of the nearby hills and despite the heavy cloud cover spots of light appeared and disappeared highlighting the nearby vacation homes.

The peak of Mt. Fuji didn't show itself until it was just about the time the sun went down. But at least the clouds started to break up before that making for some beautiful patterns in the sky. Despite the bitter cold it seems some brave people were still up for canoeing on the lake.

Spent a few days up in the Hakone area as a short get-away from Tokyo. Unfortunately the clouds were already looking dark when I got there and it ended up raining almost constantly for several days. On top of that I caught a cold complete with high fever. Still, it was nice to get out of the city for a short time and not do much more than eat, drink, and sleep. Didn't take many photos - just a couple frames around the lake the afternoon I arrived.

Checking the tracks | Tokyo Station

Another shot from the bullet train platforms at Tokyo Station. This time the driver for the next train dutifully checks to make the tracks are clear as a bullet train pulls into the station. I liked how I caught the sun was reflecting off the train over his left shoulder. Could have been a little sharper but I still like it overall.

Spent a little bit of the late afternoon over at Tokyo Station taking pictures of people on the bullet train platform. After a few weeks of nature and autumn foliage, I was ready for some images of people. I struck out earlier in the day near where I live so decided to make the trip over to the station. If nothing else I always enjoy seeing the bullet trains pulling in and out. Ended up a with a couple shots I like of which this is one.

The lady in the foreground will be the driver of the next train that pulls into the station and heads back to Osaka or destinations farther south in Japan. I can imagine that up until about 10 years or so ago it was unheard of to have female bullet train drivers. The people in pink and blue uniforms behind her are the cleaning crew. After a train arrive they clean it up and ready it for departure in about 10 or 15 minutes. Highly orchestrate and highly efficient - just as you would except for Japan.

The end of January is certainly not prime tourist season here. I was reminded of that by all the canoes and beached paddle boats, like this one, looking lonely and cold on the snow covered shore.

The sun made only a brief appeareance during the first stop of the morning. But it was just long enough to cast some interesting shadows from the lakeside fence. If you look closely, you can also see some small ice crystals or snow floating in the air.

We finally got a peak of Mt. Fuji around midday as we drove around Lake Saiko. This scene of the fisherman and mountain reminded me of some old Nat Geo or sport fishing magazine picture so I decided to process it look a little like an aged photo.

Took a nice walk this afternoon with Alfie and Joe through the Eifukucho area on the Inogashira line. Ran across a few nice shrines and temples as well as the meandering Kanda River. A very pleasant way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Another one (one of my first frames) from the flash workshop with Irwin I went to yesterday. We had the chance to photograph two Capoeira (see description below) artists.

The description from Japanorama's site :
Capoeira, both a dance and a martial art, originated in Brazil and has been gaining traction in Japan as a fun way to keep fit. It is characterized by dazzling acrobatics, aerial flips, sweeps and kicks, making it a real spectacle for any onlookers.

Took a few shots of the Rainbow Bridge before the sun came up yesterday (January 1st). Not sure if the colorful lights on the bridge are the reason for the name or the lights came after the name was decided. Anyway, the colors in the morning sky and on the bridge looked nice to me.

Rainbow Bridge is a suspension bridge crossing northern Tokyo Bay between Shibaura Wharf and the Odaiba waterfront development in Minato ward, in Tokyo, Japan. Construction started in 1987 and was completed in 1993, the bridge is 798 metres (2,618 ft) long with a main span of 580 metres (1,903 ft).[1] Officially called the 'Shuto Expressway No. 11 Odaiba Route Tokyo port connector bridge', the name 'Rainbow Bridge' was decided by the public and is colloquially known as 'RB'.

Another perspective on the first sunrise of the New Year. This one with the wide-angle lens taking in the sun, the Rainbow Bridge, and the silhouette of the buildings out in Odaiba. A little flare on the right side of the image (hard to avoid with the sun in the frame) but not so much that I think it takes much away from the image. Gotta love the clear winter days in Tokyo. Two years in a row we've had good weather for the first sunrise of the year. Let's hope we get the same next year.

The first sunrise over Tokyo for 2010. Happy New Year!!

Managed to oversleep but still get my myself over to the Takeshiba area of Tokyo in time for the sunrise. I think I went from bed to taxi to shooting in about 20 min. Not bad for operating on about 2 1/2 hours of sleep. Skipped trying to do a HDR as, predictably since I was late, couldn't get a good angle to setup the tripod and decided to handhold everything. Actually quite pleased with how my non-HDR shots turned out. This image was touched up just a little in Lightroom. No fancy Photoshop or Photomatix for me to start this year ;-)

We've (Alfie and I) shot from this location 2 years straight now so I think for 2011 we'll have to find something new. Still, the boat and cool glass building across the water do make for a good backdrop for the sunrise. Always good to start the year behind the lens.
