Sebastian

Paw Prints Charming posted a photo:

My friend went skydiving today at Skydive Palatka in Palatka, Florida. I tagged along to document the whole thing (and to provide moral support). Skydive Palatka has a super sweet, old resident dog. He just hangs out all day. His name is Sebastian. I love him!

FYI, if you're in Florida and you're lookin' for a place to skydive, but don't want to leave your pup at home, go check this place out. They let you bring your dog (as long as you can recruit someone to watch your dog while you're skydiving). I brought Taco and everyone loved him. The people at Skydive Palatka are all a bunch of dog lovers! ♥

The director of Phoenix Animal Rescue's personal dog, a 14-year-old Norwegian Elkhound named Shaker, crossed the Rainbow Bridge yesterday. Shaker was loved by a lot of people. During this past week, after he was diagnosed with bone cancer, he crossed off a lot of things on his bucket list with his mom. I have no doubt that, wherever he is now, Shaker is munchin' on hooves and chasin' chickens happily. He is no longer in pain and, one day, he'll see his mom again. Heaven gained another angel yesterday.
Ernie's Broken Teeth

In his old age, three of Ernie's front teeth have cracked off. The two top teeth seem to have broken off together and are so close together that they're almost fused. The bottom teeth are splitting because they're loose and the one has cracked off in the middle. The other, longer one has broken since taking this photo, so his two bottom teeth are almost even.

Because his teeth are in such bad shape, I have to give him a mashed up version of his pellets on a spoon. I soak his Oxbow pellets in water for about 20 minutes, then I mix it all up with vanilla yogurt and I refrigerate the whole thing (thanks to my Mom for coming up with that idea!). Ernie loves it and he has been eating it enthusiastically. He has been losing weight in his old age too (having bad teeth doesn't help -- I'm sure it was hurting him to eat before), so it's great that he's eating a whole bunch of stuff now. He has been putting some meat back on those old bones of his! :)
Ernie

Paw Prints Charming posted a photo:

I came home yesterday to find a completely listless Ernie. He didn't want to move, he was laying in his own pee, he wouldn't eat and he wouldn't drink. I was scared witless. I thought that this was the end. He was like this for an hour and he didn't even care when I pried open his mouth to give him a bit of a liquid prednisone mixture. After an hour of being completely listless and dead to the world, he began to snap out of it. Either the prednisone perked him up or something else was going on. My Mom (she's a doctor) pointed out that he might have just had a seizure, which would explain the disorientation, listlessness and not wanting to eat. It's pretty common for pet rats to have brain tumors and sometimes a brain tumor can cause seizures. It all kind of makes sense, but I'm not sure that's what is wrong with him.

Ernie is perfectly normal today and he's his usual happy self, eating cheerios and blueberries from my hand. He was even doing tricks with me this morning. It was so weird and scary as heck to find him like that yesterday. I know that he's ancient (nearly 3 years old), but it just makes me so sad that he's suffering in some way. He is on a daily liquid prednisone mixture, just in case. If he is sick in some way, it will make him feel better. My poor little man!

This photo was taken about a year ago. I'm so glad that I took SO many photos of Bert and Ernie over the past few years with them. I am now just getting to the point where I can smile when I look at Bert's photos (he passed away back in October of last year) ♥ Take TONS of photos of your pets. It might seem like a chore at the time, but it's totally worth it when they're no longer with you.

Paw Prints Charming posted a photo:

For anyone wondering, Ernie is doing well. I haven't been giving Ernie updates as much as I'd like, but I'm still photographing him every couple of days still. I just haven't gotten around to editing photos recently.

Ernie's brother, Bert, died back in October of 2012. Ernie went through a period of like a month where he was really depressed. He didn't want to run on his wheel, he had red goop around his eyes all the time and he didn't even want to come out. I was so worried about him that I even put him on antibiotics because I thought he was sick. I think he was just depressed about losing his brother. Ernie was SUPER attached to Bert (Bert was always annoyed by Ernie) and I think it really hit him hard when he eventually realized that Bert wasn't coming back. It's now just Ernie in this huge 3 story cage. I think he's a little lonely. I was thinking about bringing in another rat or two, but I realized that I'd have to quarantine them for a few weeks and that just isn't possible in my small apartment. I've been trying to spend a lot of time with Ernie ever since Bert died and I've been teaching him some tricks (he knows how to sit up on command and spin to the right).

A few months later and Ernie is now doing really well. He's not as hyper as he used to be and he sleeps a lot more than usual, but he is finally running on his wheel again. He also enjoys our training sessions. He's getting to be pretty old, so his lack of energy sometimes can probably be attributed to his old man status. Ernie and I still miss grumpy man Bert all the time :(

Can you believe it? Daisy will be 14 years old this Christmas. We're only guesstimating her age, so it's possible that she's even OLDER! We don't really have a day that we celebrate Daisy's birthday on, so we just say that she was born around Christmas. Happy Birthday to my little girl!

Georgia the Spokesdog looked fabulous in her pink tutu at the anti-dog fighting presentation about a week ago! Georgia was seized in a dog fight bust in 2010. Over the past two years, Georgia has shown so many people that dogs who come from bad backgrounds can STILL make wonderful, loving family members ♥

This is Teddy, a 7-year-old Shih Tzu. Teddy has protruding eyes, which is very common in Shih Tzus (that's the reason why she looks surprised all the time). She also has a condition called KCS or "dry eye," which requires lubricating eye drops twice daily. She can see perfectly fine though, so don't worry.
Bert is taking his meds like a CHAMP!

Paw Prints Charming posted a photo:

The good news? At least Bert is taking his medication like a CHAMP and I'm not having to force him to take it. He loves it because it has a banana flavoring, thanks to the awesome staff at West End Animal Hospital. I've done a lot of reading on the subject and it's VERY hard to find a vet that actually knows a fair amount about rats. Dr. Cottrell has two rats of her own, plus she's an expert when it comes to ferrets. In terms of medication dosing and other things, rats and ferrets are very similar. When I called and told her that Bert had gotten worse and his front paws were curling, she spent time researching and consulting with her colleagues before calling me back and letting me know that she thought it was a brain tumor (still crossing my fingers that it's not though). I'm SO happy that I was able to find a reliable vet in the area and find one that ACTUALLY cares! So, I'm shouting out a great big THANK YOU to Dr. Cottrell for making this easier on both Bert and I!

UPDATE: Bert passed away in his sleep today (October 6). I have some incredibly sad news... My baby Bertie Bott just passed away. He lived a month more than was expected and, thankfully, he didn't suffer and he died in his sleep (so, yes, he did have a brain tumor). His brother, Ernie, is doing okay and doesn't really seem to be missing Bert (or doesn't know what's going on), so that's good. I wish I could have been there for him in his final hours, but I'll see him again at the Rainbow Bridge someday ♥ I love you, Bertie Bott, and I will NEVER forget you, my little baby boy. It was the best year and a half I could have ever asked for with you. Thanks for making me laugh and for making me smile ♥
Bert is taking his meds like a CHAMP!

This is one of my favorite images of mine of ALL TIME, as weird as that sounds. I took this back in 2002 on a crappy point-and-shoot. I would have been like 12 years old back then. I was just going through my old hard drive and I stumbled on this and a myriad of other nostalgic things haha It's not even the best photo in the world, but it brings me back and I actually remember taking it.

Phoenix Animal Rescue and Georgia the Spokesdog (pictured) joined with convicted dog fighter, Omar Aldridge (also pictured), for an anti-dog fighting presentation to students at an alternative school in Bronson, Florida about a week ago. This is the first time a convicted dog fighter and his victims worked together to combat dog fighting. Phoenix's goal was to teach children empathy for dogs so that fighting them, or harming them in any way, would contradict their belief system about dogs.

In this photo, Georgia meets Omar for the FIRST time after being confiscated by animal control nearly two years ago. Georgia's reaction? She licked his hand in a gesture of forgiveness (if you zoom in REALLY close in the original, you can see her little tongue poking out). Dogs are amazing.
