This is the shot that got me into trouble with the security man. First I was told no tripod then later was informed that actually it was also "no camera". I only managed to get one shot in the bag excluding the first one where I had all my settings wrong... I so wanted to try something else. I might have to go back in a ninja suit!

The sunset was something that night.
The camera settings are all wrong, this is a case of pure inexperience really. I must have been the only guy within a 500 mile radius that would have taken a shot at night at a speed of 1/1600 sec! Honestly!

Manual mode again here with ISO at 800 and f/3.5.
I did most of the work in Lr but had to jump over to Ps to remove some electrical cables that ran diagonally across the frame. The Content Aware brush is pretty amazing!
You can see a bit of the milkyway on the right. This must have been probably the 4th time I have seen it so clearly.

On that day I disappeared for about 15 minutes and walked along the wet rocks carrying the tripod and the camera. How I managed not to fall in the juice, I don't know!?
It took me a while to find a spot where I was happy with the composition and could place the tripod onto something reasonably sturdy.
Tried various exposures and I finally decided this one worked the best.
A steep learning curve! Still a long way to go though...

I strongly recommend to view on black (by pressing L)

Pretty much as it came out of the camera.
This was taken at the end of the jetty. The walk to the rock seen on the right of the shot is a narrow path with cobbled stones raising in a gentle slope on both sides. My wife and 2 daughters got their feet wet when they didn't time the waves right :p
I set the tripod and triggered the shot with a 2 second delay to avoid camera shake and after a few tries to get the exposure right I got this one. It was really dark at that point.

Here I was on the pavement, camera mounted onto the tripod, looking up to ignore the few people around me wondering what I was up to. I took a few shots but could not really capture what I had in mind from where I was standing and with the lense I had. Moving to the middle of Navigation Street was not an option so I took a 6 shots starting from the top and moving slowly downwards to the base of the building with a photomerge in Ps in mind. The trick worked although the merged file looked a bit like an egg timer (wide at the top and bottom and narrow in the middle so I had to apply some severe crop to it. Once again I processed the B&W conversion in Silver Efex Pro 2 and gave it a bit of a grunge/HDR look.

This is my first submission to the second task, Architecture in B&W. I took this on the way back from work after spotting a potential shot a few days before. The rain has been a factor to me being able to go out and shoot it. The conversion into B&W was done in Silver Efex Pro2. ISO100, f/11, 1 sec. ND8, ND4, soft ND Grad 8. The lot on a tripod with a fair few odd looks from people coming out of the building.

Have you noticed how the star trails are shorter at the top left than the ones at the bottom right?
This is a single exposure in manual mode. I had to do a little bit of work on the sky and the foreground. I am afraid I have burnt the light coming out of the house so was unable to bring that down. I did a bit of dodging and burning here and there, especially in the foreground to add interest and dimension. There was a little bit of light coming from behind the hill but it is OK I think.
I had to crank up the ISO on this one but Lr coped with it rather well maybe with the exception of the foreground where it looks a little grainy with some red/green artefacts. It was pretty dark down there so I can't blame Lr for everything.
What do you guys and gal think?

Task 1 - Star trails

This is a stack of 21 exposure of 30 seconds each so a total of 10min 30sec. I worked on one of them in Lightroom, copied the develop settings from that one onto the other 20 then sent all 21 into Photoshop as layers. Grouped the top 20, blended them with "Lighter Colour" and created a layer mask on that group so it doesn't affect the house & tree.
Took the last layer, duplicated it and applied a "screen" effect at about 50%. Et voila!
Still don't think this is perfect but for a first attempt it could have got a lot worse.
Do any of you have any tips on how to get a better result?
